Exclamation 2002 Civic EX Auto Transmission Problems

I bought a 2002 Civic EX (1.7 VTEC) automatic new and put 125,000 miles on it in 4 years. Two years ago I bolted on a K&N FIPK intake. Recently, as of this year, I've noticed the tranny has been real jerky when driving around town. First and second gearshift is really rough until it warms up. Also, RPMs, during shift, increase by about 1,000-2,000 then decrease after shift. After the car warms up, the problem decreases. Problem is really noticeable with air conditioning on. Is this problem serious? I recently flushed the tranny fluid and it didn't help. Any recommendations?

ya its serious, thanks to honda and a defective clutch pack carrier. your trans is slipping. mine is doing the same thing with only 50k miles on it. i would give it a year before the thing dies.

Thanks for the help. I plan on getting something new later this year or earlier next year. Probably going Toyota stylez with the 07 Camry SE V6. I'm interested in the new 08 Accord but will probably get a new car before the stats and info. are out. Thanks again.

You got 125,000 miles out of that transmission? You are lucky. Sell it before it fails. Otherwise it's an expensive trans job.

In all fairness, most modern transmissions won't last very long these days, but Honda has had a few real winners lately. They just won't recall the damn things.

wasnt expensive for me I did it myself and it ended up costing under $400 including aand a B&M remote filter. TCI Master Kit, B&M trans cooler

Honda wont recall the car for a transmission prob unless its a safty issue like on the Odessy. The reason these transmissions dont last very long is because they made the shift so smooth. The only way to make it silky smooth is to let the clutches slip a bit going from gear to gear. This causes more clutch wear as everyone is seeing. And yes for those who dont know auto transmissions have clutches.

How many times in that 125,000 miles did you change the fluid?

I have 45k miles now and hoping to get what you have. At that point I think it is about par for the course since wear at over 100,000 does most all of them in. About a 2k job

I've changed the fluid four times since I've had the car. At 90,000 I did the big tune up.

I myself have gone 124k miles with my original automatic and it is still running strong. Change the fluid every 15K or so.

I am running at 165,000 km, only changed the tranny fluid 2 times.

Running strong... Don't see any probs.
