Be sure to state the year of your civic and if it is an automatic or manual.

I'm currently in process with Honda of America to replace my 57000 mile "grinding mill" of a transmission under the Magnuson-Moss Act of 1975 for Implied Warranties. And I'm curious to see just how common of a problem this really is.

Let's hear it.
Mine just failed. I have a 2002 4d LX automatic. There is 75K on it now. We have been getting oil changes regularly and did our 30K an 60K service. They want $3,800 to put in a rebuilt one. We called Honda America and waiting to hear if they will help pay for all or some of this.

$3800, thats messed up. Go to a junkyard and see if you can get one or get one from ebay that has a 30 day warranty or one a bit longer on it.

Yeah. But I have no way of getting to junk yards. I am not a mechanic and have no knowledge of how to replace a tranny. I guess I will just have to wait and see if Honda will scr#w me. I guess my other option is to have it looked at by an honest independent transmission specialist, not a Honda service center.

even a tranny shop wont charge that much. I had a complete rebuild on my old ford escort tranny and it was only $2000.

the fight goes on

Honda voided my warranty due to aftermarket part use and now Im in contact with the consumer protection agency to try to get it fixed. I got an 02 ex tranny(got it off here for 150 bucks) sitting in my garage and my mechanic said hed put it in for 240 plus tranny fluid. Now my tranny pops out of gear sometimes but Im still waiting to see WHat the consumer protection agency is going to do. Honda wants a fight they gonna get a fight. Just look around for trannys and find a good mechanic if honda is gonna warranty it. Good luck.

Update, I got a call from Honda America. They are looking into it. I just faxed off my service receipts, which are not that many. So I hope now they will split the difference at least. That does go to show that you must keep the receipts. They also look at the manual as a guide to the services you should do. So read up and follow it.

Another update. Honda America called and they are paying to put in a new transmission. We just have to pay $187 for shipping the thing to the dealer. That's a relief from the $3,800 originally quoted by the shop. What should we do now? Sell the car or keep it?

Our 2001 EX auto transmission just failed at 84,000 miles while on vacation and unable to get to a dealer (Sat. nite on Labor Day weekend in Santa Cruz). We only have the one car and have taken really good care of it--dealer service all the way for the first time in our lives! First Honda for us too, based on their "excellent" reputation (!) and resale value. Hah--not much value now....We had to get it to any open shop who took it to a local transmission shop (evidently the local dealer occasionally sends their transmission jobs to the same shop since it is a small dealership) and get a rental car to get back to Sacto. Two weeks and $3400 later, we were able to finally pick it up (and that's $400 additionally for the rental car as well). The local dealer when we finally reached them did quote us $3800-$4000 for the replacement trans. So we saved a little (!) I'm filing a claim with Honda of America because I've taken care of the car etc. etc. and a tranny shouldn't fail that early but don't have a whole lot of hope of success -- but maybe since I have all the service records, that will help. It's helped to read all of these posts. Any advice?

1. Had the popping out of second gear which turned into second gear never engaging. That was annoying, rippin it in first to near redline, then shifting to thurd.
2. Occasional difficulty putting the car in reverse/gear one... find this is resolved by easing off the brake pedal.
3. Tranny noises started off small and got louder and louder. Eventually turned into an entire tranny overhaul.
4. After tranny overhaul, car making similar pre-problem noises as before.

the consumer protection agency inspector sided with hondacare and honda of america because they don't have mechanics that could determine wether or not my parts caused the failure. He said I would have to call the federal trade commion and the dmv because they have mechanics that could do that. But that meant they would take my car(daily driver) and then 3rd and fifth gear starting popping out( piece of crap civic tranny). The last sunday before I swapped the 02 tranny in it popped out of fith so many times I almost wanted to just rip my hair out. Anyway I changed my oil in my mechanics class and found some oil on my tranny. I had my mechanic look into it and sure enuf a real main seal was shot, and a motor mount ripped. With the seal and mount part and install and tranny install total came to $390. Anway I think I have given up on my d17a2 and come springtime gonna do kseries or k24 hybrid swap. Origanly I was gonna build and turbo motor but the way these trannys are and the fact that the dezod kit doesn't have an intake or filter(recomends wire mesh in turbine housing)-that just doesn't sit well with me so I talked to fastestex(thanx tim) about the k series swap. The way the motor sits you can have a turbo with intake and filter and those motors have alot more potential than the d17a2. Honda already voided my warranty(smurf them those smurfin smurfs) so I got nothing to lose with a swap. I don't wanna give up I realy wanted to see wear I could go with a d17 but I keep hearing a K series motor screaming in my ear.
