Well, the Civic is headed towards 80k miles, and the transmission has started to make some wierd noises.

First off, after engaging first gear, the transmission sounds as if it's dragging something inside. It's making a sound that's hard to describe, but I'm wondering if anyone else in here is having similar issues. It's almost as if you could literally hear the gears turning inside, but not smoothly.

How much would a rebuild cost? Or should I just opt for replacing it from a transmission I can buy off of someone else?

Maybe you need a new clutch assembly, pressure plate, clutch disc and have the flywheel machined. Also have you changed the fluid ever?

dont rebuild it!!!!!!! I just got my dads tranny rebuilt on a chevy and most shops charge up the ***. Either get a new clutch set or just go to a junk yard and get a tranny with less miles cause most shops will charge like 700-900 on rebuilding it.

Would a bad/dying clutch make a sound like that? I don't know enough about transmissions, so I'm trying to learn something new here.

I'm guilty of not changing the transmission fluid yet, though. It's next on the list!

Change the fluid! I had to do mine at 25k and it made a BIG difference.
The noise could be bearing noise. Also, do you HAVE enough fluid in there to begin with?
Bad clutch will make sounds in ANY gear. Bad input shaft bearings are common in these civics.... Hmmm.... try fresh trans fluid first. It's the cheapest, and it needs it anyway.

I've had to replace the bearing in my tranny twice already.

Make sure you change your tranny fluid!

OK, I'll definitely get the fluid changed next week. It comes out to about $54 (already called).

NEXT QUESTION: How much did you have to pay to change the bearing? Did you have to take it to a shop? And what exactly is the input shaft bearing?

I have noticed that as I get closer to 60k miles my tranny is making a bit of noise and it doesnt go into gear as smoothly. I hope its just the gear oil that needs to be changed. I am thinking about putting some redline in soon.

I guessing it was your input shaft bearing? I can hear mine when I let the clutch out, but its only enough to hear when I am in the garage. How loud of a noise would you consider bad?

What Kinda noise is it...and in what gear..mine made a noise kinda like something shakin in a can or something it was wierd it turned out to be my second gear syncro..it did it mainly in second and always when I turned right and that was at 8,000 miles!

Here is what i dealt with at about 60k. It would make a horrible clatter until clutch was depressed and then it began to do it all the time. Until finally the ****er refused to shift into gear. So i tore the bitch apart to change the clutch and low and behold fuggin Flywheel bolt had stripped itself out and was forced against the clutch plate So i changed all of em and re-torqued and all has been well ever since. But that **** pissed me the hell off. God damn Honda and there retarded quality control employees

My friend had that problem in his 7th Gen. He didn't fix it and eventually his tranny blew up.

He got a new tranny installed for the same price Honda would charge me for the extra parts to fix it!

What you guys are probably hearing is the throwout bearing or the pilot bearing. The pilot bearing is what the imput shaft sits in inside the crankshaft of the motor. The throwout bearing is in the clutch. While its all apart, might as well spend the extra money and have a clutch thrown in too, labor will be the same since its got to come out anyway. The clutch will need to be replaced soon if it has 80,000 miles on it now. Im not a tech, but that would be my guess, probably not the imputshaft bearing though. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Definitely need to be changing the fluid. Just did mine (55K) and used Redline MTL. Actually made a difference in how smooth the shifting was. Think I'll change it a little more frequently now though, every 25K probably.

It sounds like a bunch of clatter inside the transmission when idle. Not too loud, but noticeable.

Then after engaging first gear (and second, and third), as I start to drive, the clatter gets louder.

It's hard to explain.

Do transmission shops have payment plans?
