WASHINGTON, Aug. 29 -- Honda Motor Co. Ltd. is recalling 120,649 model year 2001 Civics sedans and coupes to check for fuel hose clamps that could lead to a fuel leak in an accident, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Wednesday.
In a collision, without enough clamping force, the tube between gas cap and the tank could disconnect allowing fuel to spill and burn in the presence of an ignition source, the agency said.
Honda began notifying owners June 29 and its dealers have been instructed to check the hose clamps for proper torque and tighten them correctly if needed, NHTSA said.
