Question tranny problem

while waiting at the light today i was in neutral, of course. as the light turned green i tried to put the car in first, it would go halfway, like something was stopping it. i tried several times and revved the motor but still nothing, i put it into second then back into first it finally went, but what is wrong? i never had this problem before. thanks To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

does that have anything to do with the rubber bushings? this is an area I'm unfamiliar with, but I've ordered Kap Yoda's bushings and I'm hoping that will stop some shifting problems I've run in to.

That happened to me once also. I did the same thing as you did, put it in 2nd then back into 1st. I think it has to do with the synchro's not sync'ing up correctly. Kinda like how the owner's manual says that if your having difficulty going into reverse gear to put it in a different gear first to line up the synchro's. I believe our trannies dont have reverse synchro, but somehow it still helps the gears that do. Dunno.. guessing here.

This rarely happens, but can on any stick car. You were sitting in JUST the right spot were the gear teeth could not mesh. Happened to me on every car I drove at least once. Cure: Try 2nd and then first, this moves the gears just enough, or let off the brake to roll the car just slightly.
Yeah, it's a weird thing if it happens at a light. But it's not a tranny problem. Just dumb luck.

The reason to shift into a forward gear before reverse is the stop the gears from moving thus making it slide right into reverse smoothly.
