Yahoo! consumer reviews of '03 Civics. Sad but true.
The funny thing is... the ignorance level reminded me of how some people act on this site towards a car that's NOT a Honda Civic that's believed to be a lower "quality" car.
I decided to take a look at all posts that were marked 1-3 stars out of 5. Didn't bother looking at any 4-5 star ones because I wouldn't be surprised about what they'd say. (Especially for the fact that I'm one owner who hasn't had a major problem with the car.)
Well, from what appears to be:
Honda's quality is slipping... at least with the Civic.
The... ignorance... the hatred... as I'll mention again.
The negative points sound stronger than the positive.
It's true that automotive recalls on domestic cars get more publicity than imports.
Most interesting post:
Read the November Car&Driver comparison test of 10 compact sedans. Guess what?
the Civic LX came in 5th place. After driving one lately, I'd say they were being generous. Very harsh ride. Engine makes more noise than power. Quality control seems to be slipping. Very mediocre car. But they do run forever. Even if they beat and bore you to death along the way. And who cares if they hold together for 150,000+ miles. Who keeps any car that long anymore?
Oh, and I am happy with my car. Although it's only one small source of people's rating for our cars, too bad Honda seems to be dropping the ball with one of their best selling cars. It made me curious to what people think on this site about Honda's track record especially if you've owned more than just a 7th Generation Civic.

The bland and boring part is like a foundation for us to start modding and customizing the car.
Thats why I like Hondas and most bland looking cars.
I don't want a car "customized" straight from the factory because that means everyone will have one.
Okay, I don't know where Im going with this now
The bland hondas seem to be a good platform to start modding (mostly the looks).
I do wish Honda bumped up the power slightly.

Well, having owned 6 hondas and my sister owning 3 civics, I'd say honda is what it always has been. I never had any illusion that honda was the best car in every category. No manufacturer can claim that position as it's impossible. I have always viewed honda as having bullet-proof reliability and durability.
I don't think anything is slipping. Say that about the accords, the cr-v, the pilot, the odyssey....try saying those models and tell me honda is slipping. I would say they "slipped up" and skinned the hiny a little but the way the current gen is selling, I am not sure anyone has noticed. I think the rattles in the civic is the major problem. I would have bought a vw if I wanted rattles.
Anyhow, if you set out to find something on the net to prove a feeling in your gut, you will find it. People hear a few others talking about problems with their civics and then all of a sudden, a sunvisor making a noise becomes another testament to their friend's comments.
Also, MOST people do not vocalize their positive experiences. People that have bad experiences are bitter and want to tell the whole world. These are the ones that you find writing those reviews and crying out for attention....reminds me of the anti-war protesters. They want to believe that they are in the majority, but in fact, they are not. (In US) Yes, there are some problems but in the majority, honda is a tough cookie to beat no matter which way ya look at it.
Oh, and wasn't the civic the best selling compact in america last year? It was either '01 or '02, or both. I don't think anything is slipping. It may just be that Honda is on such a pedestal that people expect the cars to be perfect.
oh #2...some got lemons and say that honda as a whole is goin down hill. I answer with my aunt smoked until she was 90 and died of natural causes....there is always the exception(s).
I have to agree that Honda screwed it a little with the 2k1 civic, but they have been fixing the quirks and 2k3s seem to be really good cars. I rode in a friendīs 2k3 and it felt different from my car, no rattles, no bouncy suspension.
But overall I still think it is a really good car. Mine has been very reliable and compared to my sister in lawīs same year, similar mileage focus, my civic has "aged" a lot better than the Focus. Her car feels like itīs a 5 year old car, mine feels like a 2 year old.
I had a 2000 VW Golf 2.0. Now there is a car that is way overpriced and not nearly as reliable as a Honda. Someone said that Hondas are good because they are reliable and are a basis for modding. That is one reason why so many enthusiasts mod Hondas. Also, i agree with the fact that factory appearance packages are too "cookie cutter". Although I wouldn't mind having sport tuned engine, suspension and what not...these are Civics...not EVO's or WRX's.
There was a good thread I read on VWVortex once. They mentioned that VW has built a car (at least the MKIV) that has "perceived" quality. That is they use slightly nicer plastic for interior, closer panel gaps, and Recaro seats. But, all that doesn't matter if there blowing coilpacks all over the place....which is going on now. One of there slogans is "i'd rather push a VW, than drive a Honda". Doesn't make much sense to me when your spending $20k+ on a VW hatchback. I'd rather be able to drive my "boring" Honda than have to wait at the dealer all the time. The VP of something for VW said that some of the "lemons" that Consumer Reports evaluated could have been "monday Cars". That is the workers are too hung over and tired from the weekend off to work on Monday, thus making shoddy cars. That not something I would want my car maker to be saying in public.
Just to be fair, all car company's make good and bad cars...even Honda.
