Timing Belt Question

yesterday i took my girlfriends 1993 ford escort to the local jiffy lube to have the oil changed. later that night i took it out to hang with some friends. the car just "had" the timing replaced a year ago by a friend of mine. while at a light last night the car died. i tried to restart the car thinking it had stalled.... it didnt start. i popped the hood and i see that the timing belt is off and a smooth tensioner wheel is sitting right near the alternator. anyway, the car has been towed to a repair facility. it wont be seen until monday. anyone know about the escort motor 1.9 lx and if the heads could have smashed my valves? i could have sworn the earliest escorts had this problem a lot so they made the block and internals better cuz they were tired of having to replace engines after 1982. but who knows. this car is 10 years older. that was not the timming belt that you saw. You can't see the timing belt unless you take off the cover. The belt that you say was the cerpintein <--- sot sure of the spelling. That is the belt that run everthing ie. alt. a/c comp (if it has one) p/s pump.

The timing belt and serpentine belt are different, so you should of been able to distinguish between the two easily. The serpentine belt runs the accessories like the power steering pump, a/c, etc. The timing belt runs around the harmonic balancer and camshaft and most likely a tensioner and is a cogged belt. Tiing belts arent usually exposed and are behind a cover liked mentioned above. Hopefully its not the timing belt.

I used to drive a 1990 ford escort.. the timing belt broke in the middle of the baltimore harbor tunnel on I-95.. it was embarrassing
