Is the MazdaSpeed Protege fast?

I keep seeing them around campus. The 3 or 5 door thing. Are they fast? I know MazdaSpeed is supposed to be a race division of Mazda or something but I dunno. It's kinda ugly.

I think it's the turbocharged Protege he's talking about. SOUNDS FAST. I would so want that car but because I think protege's (not protege5) are pretty ugly looking, I won't trade in my car for that. But dam it's like factory tuned which is so awesome cuz u get warranty on tuned parts from the dealer. And they tune that car very nice from looking at the reviews of the MP3. The MP3 was pretty good already but now they claim 170HP and 160 torque, threw in racing beat exhaust again, Tokico shocks, mp3 player, 6 speakers and a sub. OH, and HEAVY DUTY CLUTCH!

I wish Honda would do that for the vics but then they'd charge so much for it u can buy the same aftermarket mods twice over and still have money left. That's what we want!!!! (At least that's what I want done to my car

I don't think he's really seeing Mazdaspeeds all over the place cuz there's only 2000 in NorthAmerica to go around. Fast? Well, faster than walking, slower than WRX and faster than civics. The car is made more for handling than pure speed, and i'm sure you could increase the boost for added power later (given you'd void the warranty on the turbo).

The Spicy orange will be available in Canada for the first shipment, then in 2003 the Black ones will be available. Price wise, it's about 26-27,000 MSRP Canadian Dollars obviously.

I do agree, normal protege Sedans are kinda ugly, but then again i think the new 7thgen civic sedans are ugly too. 7th gen civic coupes are nice tho.

I've retracted my deposit on the MSProtege cuz word is the turbo 'should' be available (within a year) as an upgrade kit to the existing 2.0L Protege/Protege 5's for about 3-4000$.

Yes the Pro5's look a lot nicer than the sedans.

alex053 will become famous soon enough
I think Sport Compact Car tested it in the 15's in the quarter mile. Nothing major but the turbo can always be messed with.

Best handling car for 20k. When C&D reviewed the MP3 and others in it's price range it was the only car on their list that kept up a porche/ferrari on the track. Now with the MP-S even better handling, i'd say it's probably the best handling car for 20k.

I think the protege is a pretty nice looking car as well as the protege5. I like the exterior looks of my sedan a wee bit better (over the protege, not p5) but definately like the civic interior a lot more. I think the turbo car would be an awesome ride to have. It's already known for it's rail like handling, now it has some power to make it really fun. However, for 26k, I would save a few grand and get the rsx-s.

its a pretty good car i was gonna get that instead of the civic but then, i ended up getting my civic, it handles extremely well, its about 15.5 quartermile stock, u can hear it spool on stock but if u get an intake for it, the blow off is real weird sounds like a turkey lol and i was able to get it for 20,000 out the door in southern california so i'd imagine u can get it cheaper elsewhere.... and only about 2500 or so of them were made so its kinna rare

Also, its stock intercooler is a bit small, but thats easily fixable with either an aftermarket intercooler or a Euro-Spec Protege's (i think...its some Euro Spec Mazda) intercooler. Add in a larger exhaust and you got want you need to turn boost up high enough for anyone to enjoy.

^^yep, the intercooler is mounted on the side.
170 hp turbo sounds really pathetic, but I know those things can handle more boost, so I guess its a good deal.

my friend with a 2003 rsx-s raced my other friend with a MSP and lost the RSX has intake header exhaust knowledgy wires(dunno how to spell it) and the MSP was boosting around 10psi and had some plugs thats it

The speed is a nice car and for the money its a great deal they said it handled better than an ITR, but the thing is, that the MSPs internals are weak so if u are looking for extra boost on those cars u gotta beef it up a bit....a lot of people have blown those engines

^^^ i heard the same thing about them having weak internals
i dont know if its true or not

to me handling isnt a big thing. im not gonna be autocrossing anytime soon
so if i had a choice for a 20k car id get the srt4 i dont care what anyone says.
ive seen those things run on the street and the track and they are pretty sick as long as the driver knows what hes doing

ya for sure from what i kno cuz i wanted to get one before...the car runs lean so ur able to slap on a manual boost controller that they have for 40 bux and you can boost more...stock boost is about 6 pounds some peopel boost 8-10 on stock internals fine....not reccomended but as always more boost is always risky but it should be able with the same fueling, so its not that bad

well ya it can handle more boost, the stock boost on the car is 6 pounds...the car runs lean so ur able to boost more some peopel boost about 10 or 12 for a mbc that they have for that car for 40bux but it depends which ecu you have cuz the dealer does their own ecu flashing to improve the performance cuz it has some lag...overall not a bad car just its mazda i unno sounds unreliable unlike a honda that always keeps goin :-)
