I got pulled over a couple weeks ago for speeding. Cool no problem just another ticket right. Well, the cop obviously had more in mind. He came back up to my window, after looking up my DL, and started talking about after market exhausts. He said that it's illegal to have any after market exhaust system. I was like wtf, gave him a smart a$$ response, I asked him how it was illegal if you still pass emmissions with it. He kind of stuttered a little bit and said, " I don't know, it's just the law" Okay right than I was like this pig is a rookie. Next thing you know two more cops show up and start looking around the car for some other tickets they could give me. To make a long story short, he ended giving me a speeding ticket, ticket for no front plates, and verbally warned me about the exhaust system.
Has this ever happened to anyone? Is it true?

I'm pretty sure most after market parts, including intakes and exhaust is illegal. If it doesnt' come on your car, you can get a ticket for it, if the cop feels like it. I'm sure it varies from state to state as well.
that bites, some cops pull people over to give them a speeding ticket and mess with the person to get a rise or some sort of response, I guess it's for their personal enjoyement. Speeding = 1 ticket, liscense plate =1 ticket depending upon state (I have to have one here in CT) and the exhaust you got no ticket so you were let off, don't worry about it. Suggestion having some sort of documentation within your car to prove it meets state requirements. Making a stink will only get the police all riled up.
I got pulled over near aurora and the cop told me the same things, thats the reason he pulled me over. I was like WTF? Luckily he just gave me a warning, I would hate to put my stock exhaust back on. The funny thing was I wasn't even getting on it. laws sucks!
ive been pulled over tons of times, i already lost count!!! lol. anyways, the cops always tell me that modifying my car in any way is illegal. i also argued about passing emissions but the cop(s) just keep busting me for more mods i have for my car. it aint worth argueing w/ a cop.thats my opinion though.but anyways, dont worry about it.loud exhaust is a problem but pop in a silencer and try to avoid cops.
Cops will pull you over for anything they want. Even if your mods aren't illegal they'll give you a ticket just to make you go through the hassle.....Cop pulled me and my buddy over because he said my exhaust was too loud, funny thing was I didn't have an exhaust at the time just an intake....He just profiled us as two dark skinned guys with buzzed heads driving a lowered Honda......
Man that is crazy I don't know if ohio laws are just different or what but I never been pulled over for any mods done to my car. I never heard anybody else being pulled over for it either. Just that your car passes echeck here they don't care. The only way you get pulled over here is if your exhaust is really loud or really dark window tint or your car is not safe in some way.
Please do not be disrespectful and refer to the officer as a pig. There are words in the English language which can serve to illustrate your point in a more adultlike fashion, such as "the unprofessional police officer." There is no way to tell if an officer is a rookie simply by what he/she says or by how he/she acts.
With that said, he had cause for a lawful stop for speeding and in the course of that stop, anything which the officer had cause to believe was illegal was fair game to issue a summons. Many states require a front license plate, including New York. I tend to issue summonses for no front plate because I expect to be able to read a license plate from both the front or the back. If the exhaust system emits a "harsh and unreasonable" amount of noise, it is unlawful. Summonses for that can usually be issued under BOTH the vehicle and traffic law and also under any town, village or local ordinance prohibiting unreasonable noise.
I tend not to issue for mods unless the motorist I stop has an attitude, but as someone else mentioned, if your car doesn't come with it, chances are you can be issued a summons. The Vehicle and Traffic Law in my state has close to 1500 sections.
I have never been pulled over in the vic for anything but was several times in my modded accord a few years ago. I was pulled for no inspection and running a couple redlights, 4 different instances. The cop never mentioned or even looked at any of the mods on my car. I have never heard of anyone getting pulled for mods in my area.
maybe police departments across the USA are banding together to create a "zero-rice-tolerance" enforcement team... cop sees disgusting mods (ie. spoilers, nozzle LEDs, stickers, etc.) on an otherwise decent car (ie. 7th gen civic, etc.) -- cop gives ticket! it's like the fashion police... for the highway!
of course, this is the latest development from our good friends Bush and Ashcroft, who want to make it known that "loud exhaust pipes" are a form of "domestic sound-wave terrorism", and that "windshield washer nozzle LED lights provide terrorists, who may be using camera-equipped satellites, with a better view of the USA at night".
Anybody runs the risk of a summons if they equip their car with illegal items. It's not correct to assert that cops are "picking on people" when they issue summonses for mods. I don't really enforce mods on cars, however, many are illegal, and officers reserve the right to enforce those equipment violation laws.
What are you all talking about???!! I have never heard of such moronic police officers...I used to travel cross-country a lot before I got married and all my cars have always been modified...one thing, though: I always make sure I get parts and accessories that are CARB-exempt and 50-state legal. If you've got the exemption paperwork, do not even give a citation or warning a second thought.
I got pulled over all the time and never got hassled because of my mods. Only once was I asked (in CA) to produce CARB-exemption paperwork for a header.
You are absolutely free to modify your car as you please, so long as you still pass smog and safety inspections!!! Do not let ignorant officers ruin your day
