What Honda should I buy?

I want to buy a cheap Honda civic and make it a project car. I already own two vehicles so this would not be done in any kind of hurry, I want to do it right and custom. I plan to pick a civic up off craigslist or where ever I find one for cheap. It doesn't have to be in running condition. I just want a nice frame that can be built on, so I can install good aftermarket parts and a new engine swap.

What I want to know is what Honda civic would be right for this project. I want to build my first turbo charged tuner, I want to make sure I get the right civic for the job. I know the SI is talked highly of, but I plan to change most the parts so "stock" is not the quality I'm after when it comes to the engine.

The interior doesn't have to be fancy, I just want basic options like power windows, what have you.. I'm feeling comfy within the years 95 and up.

One big thing of importance to me is part availability, from engine to panels and everything in between. hands down which civics are the best when it comes to part availability?

Those questions are like a shot in the dark I know, but I was curious because I am almost done rebuilding my Jeep MJ and I want another project.
I'm sure building a fast civic would be fun. Thanks!

6th and 7th gen civics have lots of parts available.

If you really want a challenge then I would do an 01-05 civic. An easier option is 96-2000. One that would not require an engine swap but you could turbo would be an EP3 civic.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

^ Hell Yeah!!

Stuff a J in a hatch and you have a bullet.

Or a Corvette engine, and have a rocket.

Re: What Honda should I buy?

Still my all time favorite Civic build... what ends up looking like a bone stock '79 Civic with a k20a in it....the entire thread is worth the read. This ends up being an award winning car featured in magazines.

Re: What Honda should I buy?

The 2000 was the last models with double wishbone, and car grew in proportions, strut suspension after.
Recommend 95-00. They also have a lot more aftermarket parts due to civic losing the aura after 01...

there's a compilation of generations here and in wikipedia

Any older CRX is good, light weight and can drop in a B16 With a type R head and it'll move down the road.

Re: What Honda should I buy?

I am partial to the 01-05 gen but... It's because of my trio...
Personally being in Alabama no emissions no inspection I would do a 96-2000 new enough for obd2 cheap enough parts and a lot of learned lessons on this forum. Let's face it if you buy one with 200+ K to get the low price tag your going to have to do suspension upgrades and a custom engine regardless. What got me hooked on civics was a good friend bought a 99 with snapped timing belt and 267k for 450, he went to Orlando and picked up a Jdm import engine and transmission for 950 then another 600 on suspension timing belt water pump and some gaskets for less then 2k he had a good looking good handling car
I have seen a lot of 97 coupes and newer going for less then a grand no rust down here.
