Shifting Without the clutch

I was having fun in my car the other day, and I found out that if you Match the RPMs in netural, as it would be in gear it easily goes into that gear no grinding. I was woundering if anyone who knows a lot about trannys, knows if this is bad. I know in theory it shouldn't hurt but I was wounding if I just didn't know something.

my dad used to do that in my accord all the time....i dont have the balls to try it......and no, its not bad for the tranny if you know how to do it correctly.....big truck drivers do it all the time as well to save wear on the clutch.....peace

Doesn´t seem too harmful, but I really don´t know. I´ve done it before and if you mess up you can grind the gears....... not good.

yea ive heard about people doing this but ive always been to scared to do it in all of my cars

Thanks. Its the easiest to do from 3rd to fourth because on the LX it RPM's almost exaclty match the speedometer.

IT is if you dont know what your doing personally ill keep with the clutch after all thats one of the reasons i bought a 5sdp was for the control

Yeah like eveyone has said it won't hurt the tranny if done right, just make sure you shove it into gear, don't hesitate and gently put it into gear thats when you'll grind the gears.

all the muscle cars back in the 70's used to always shift without the clutch, its called power shifting. cars with more power its ok to do it with, but with a civic, id say its a little risky. if youre racing the rpm's its not like you're being lazy, so why not pop the clutch in? thats half the fun anyways. I would say it isnt horrible, but by no means would i make it a regular thing to do.

Wait how is it that this works? You match the rpms to what? I wanna try this and then ill let everyone know how my experience went! Hopefully good!

It's when the syncronizers in the tranny sync (line) up at a certian RPM allowing the shifting of gears without a clutch and it's not good on finely tuned transmissions like ours.

To try this yourself it actually is pretty easy as long as you know what rpm's your engine is at at certain shift points. While shifting up through the gears theres nothing to worry about b/c when you shift up the rpm drops due to the gear ratio. When down shifting you need to rev the engine to the rpm the enigne would be at after the downshift, or at least resonably close to what it would be, it would be safer to go higher then you think you need to be.
