change ATF or new tranny?

my 01 auto tranny is giving me sh*t and has been since ~80k miles (right now sitting at 118k). i plan on replacing it with an 05 auto tranny, but dont have enough money yet. its slips like a bitch if i drive it before its warmed up, not so bad after its warm. and when taking off its hesitant and sluggish. since i bought it at 80k the ATF fluid hasnt been changed. im not sure if it was changed before i bought it so im just going to say no . could changing the ATF improve my transmission, or at this point am i pretty much fukd.

btw im going on a trip to indiana (again*sigh*) in a few weeks, i have no choice but to take my civic, and am worried if im ganna break down on the side of the road, stuck in the middle of no where.

Re: change ATF or new tranny?

Replace the fluid. Drain and fill. Do it again after you get back from your trip- you can only remove like 70% of the fluid with a drain. That should get most of the old crap out and you'll be running new fluid. Decide on a new tranny after that. If you were running your engine on the same oil for 118k miles your engine would be toast.. trannys arent much different, they need attention now and again too.

Re: change ATF or new tranny?

^lmao no i change my oil every 3000 miles, but have neglected my trasmission since it was going to hell anyway. ive found a used 05 a/t for $600+shipping with 14k miles on it. so when i get back from my trip, ill mostlikely be getting that.

Re: change ATF or new tranny?

if its slipping i wouldnt drive it that far. i see these things just shit out at random all the time. your takin a hell of a risk driving it. even if you change the fluid, your clutches are worn out. its only a matter of time before they leave you stuck somewhere

Re: change ATF or new tranny?

slipping when warm means its ready to die any time. new fluid wont help that at all, its a mechanical problem with the clutch packs.

Re: change ATF or new tranny?

oh btw it dosnt slip much when its warm. to any other person driving my car, they wouldnt be able to tell. but i can feel it slip alittle. in the past 40k miles ive had it, the only slippage thats gotten worse is when i drive it cold. hasnt really gotten any worse once its warm.
