I was trying to remove the starting motor from my girlfriend's 1994 Si but the distributor looking thing was in the way....it has all the wires going to the spark plugs. I took the 3 bolts out of it, pulled it out and laid it aside. Then I noticed that a pile of oil (or something) had leaked out of the hole it goes into and the oil is now all over the engine, transmission and wires. I can clean that off but how do I refill it? Is it just simply pouring more oil into where it normally goes? Is this some special lubricant that has to be topped up a special way? I have no idea what I'm doing here.

Damn.. My guess would be just oil... although I've never worked on a car with a distributor. Check the dipstick, is it lower then it was before you started working on it?
okay well im guessing that since you shouldnt have oil in the cap, you took out the whole distributor. im not good with this stuff either but i dont think oil shouldve come out at all. if you just took the cap off and oil came out, you need a new distributor.

The distributor is connected to the cam, so if you took the whole thing off, it doesn't seem too unusual for oil to come out. I've never taken mine off though, so I can't confirm from experience. However, I do know that if the distributor o-ring goes bad it will leak oil. So that leads me to believe that it is perfectly normal, assuming that you removed the entire thing like gearbox said. If you just took the cap off...then it is most definitely NOT normal.
You should just be able to re-install and then check your oil. If needed, just add it normally like you would after an oil change.

Ya, I took the whole distributor out of the block, I figured it was connected to the cams. I'll try reinstalling and topping up with oil. Didn't want to turn the engine on until I was sure. Will it line up with the cams again on its own?

It's normal for some oil to leak out of the dizzy when you remove it. Replace the o-ring while you have it out and make sure you don't re-install it 180 degrees off. The 6th gen Civics is keyed in such a way that it can only bee installed correctly. Your 5th gen dizzy may not be keyed but you have a 50-50 chance of getting it right.
im guessing you didnt mark the position of the distributor when you took it off either. if you feel a loss of power, get it retimed. it is normal for a few ounces of engine oil to spill out from the head when the distributor is removed. just check the level before you start the car up.

okay im joining the club. i tried to replace the dist rotor on a 92 accord, when i pulled off the old one i heard something metallic fall and jingle in the bay and i cant find it. does anyone know what that was? maybe a washer or something? also the old rotor felt loose i could turn it left and right quite a bit. i tried the new one hoping whatever fell out wasnt important and it felt nice and tight. i started the engine and it seems to be running fine? im still wondering what fell out tho.
idk about your situation tho, like mentioned on some cars, you can only put it back one way. but if this isnt the case, youre screwed and gonna have to get the timing set like skipbarber said.

yeah if you dont mind, carefully pull off your rotor button and see if theres anything else on the gear shaft. the rotor is a small plastic piece that is on the side where the cap goes (inside, under the cap). it should just pull out and dont worry, it only goes back on one way. can you check and see if theres anything behind it after you pull it off, and also if you can turn the rotor LOOSELY when its installed. dont force turn it just use light pressure.
