Of course, this is a HONDA CIVIC site, and it's full of fanboys. I can't say that I am one but, you're going to see a lot of ignorance from people/or people just warping the truth to make HONDA seem like the king. If you try to say that TOYOTA's are rip-offs of HONDA's or even MAZDA's for that matter you're just plain being silly. All of the above car companies make great reliable cars and I really don't think that any of them have an edge over the other.
My concern is that many of these cars have become so mass produced that they are now being put together a lot more poorly than they have in the past. Especially with TOYOTA and HONDA . Mass production has hurt the quality control. MAZDA will probably follow suit as well being that FORD has taken them over.
i think the amount of problems I see that people have on this site with rattling and stalling is alarming. I am surprised that HONDA has gotten so sloppy over time, I would have thought that they would get better.

By the way, isn't TOYOTA/LEXUS the inventor of the oh so played out ALTEZZA rear taillight style? NISSAN (ALTIMA, MAXIMA) and MAZDA (RX-8) have both jumped on this bandwagon already and I'm sure there are more who will too. HONDA hasn't copied this trend...YET.
Good point Astr.
I haven't had any major problems either and I love my car.
I know I paid a little more than a similar car but like they say you pay what you get for.
Yeah my previous car was my moms 88 Civic Hatchback and its had well over 180K on it when I started driving it, and I decked it out but it was too small for me and had to many miles so got out of college and got the 01 Civic and its a great car but yeah I have issues, yeah the front of the car gets rock chips way to easy, build a better bumper. Also the power windows on my car I don't like, but over all every car has its goods and bads and the good out weighs the bad.
But if I had the cash at the time I would have bought the Accord Coupe but glad I waited since the new V6 Manual is coming out here in 2003 save up and get that one fully loaded.
You said that you have driven an 03 Corolla. What do you estimate the 0 - 60 time with the automatic was. It seems that getting under 10 sec. with a small engine is a big hurdle, do you think the Corolla does that. The information on the internet is sketchy, there aren't many performance reviews of the new Corolla. Some say it is the same old Corolla, others say it has advanced. If it is capable of 0 - 60 in under 10 sec. with an automatic, then there really is a new benchmark.
Since the EX can do 0 - 60 in under 10 sec and if the new Corolla can do the same, that means that Honda will be forced to put that engine into the LX without raising the price in order to stay even. The big thing is how will the 1.8 Toyota engine rate on the new Toyota. If it is better than the current Honda engine then Honda is on the defensive. I myself am satisfied with the 1.7 Honda engine with the LX automatic, but I'll always take more pep if I can get it.
Similar opinion to previous posts re: good major components but piss-poor interior fit & finish on this Civic sedan. Great car to ride, dependable (knock, knock!), economical and comfortable (would have purchased Corolla if it had the ergonomics of this Honda). But . . . . . rattles, failing interior parts and numerous trips to dealership have been routine over first year/27,000 km of ownership. Plenty of problems common to other's complaints (seat loose, dash/post-pillar, window/door rattles). Yeah, I regret the purchase. I don't buy the new design = problems should be expected. To me a disappointing apathy to the manufacturing process. There was a time that Honda did not have the magnitude of common problems that it has had over the last two years.
Horsepower only means so much. Torque, Curb weight, tires, axle ratio, etc. all play a very big part in the overall speed of a car. For example a HONDA EX at 127hp is a good two seconds better 0-60 than a FORD FOCUS ZX3 at 130hp. I really don't think HONDA feels a need to compete with TOYOTA. They pretty much both have a strong hold of the market. Especially in the case of ACCORD and CAMRY. They both respectively outsell the competition by a large market in this area. When companies like DODGE and CHEVY start making a push at them then they might worry. Right now, HONDA and TOYOTA have arguably the most "RELIABLE" cars in the world. At least under the hood, where it counts most. Assembly quality has dropped a lot recently in HONDA's from what I can see. Unfortunately the only real comepetion for a CIVIC or a COROLLA is the overrated FORD FOCUS, underrated MAZDA PROTEGE and the NISSAN SENTRA which is in desperate need of a redesign.
Once again, you have to wonder if HONDA's poor assembly quality that they are being criticized for as of late with haunt them down the line.
no offense, but why are all of you guys so concerned about the 0-60 times anyway??? Those times on paper are done by professional drivers, and they take the best time out of many tries...It's not like we (the normal people) can pull those times...unless you're either really lucky, or you're one good drag racer.
anyway, to get about to the topic of the thread, I'm only regretting not being able to convince my parents to buy me a 2000 Si instead of my 2001 LX, but hey, they control the money, and the 91 Civic LX I had was on its last breath. To me, 01 Civic is hell of an improvement from 91 Civic. I do wish that there were more aftermarket support as everybody has basically agreed to...Basically I got screwed with that one, 5th and 6th gens were where all (99.9%) of aftermarket companies are concentrating, and I end up with 4th and 7th gen Civics.
I do feel for Nycivic and others who have had problems with their Civics. Fortunately for me, I have had no problems what so ever...except for the one time some of the interior electronic stuff stopped working...after looking through every fuse, I did find the problem...but anyway.
I'm very happy with my Civic, but if I can ever convince my parents, I would trade my 01 LX in for a 00 Si in a heart beat. Too bad my parents HATE used cars. They love Hondas...they've only bought Hondas in their lives, but never will they buy a used anything.
Oh hey, by the way, where are all the rattling coming from??? I haven't heard a peep from my car, YET. (7,500 miles so far)
I got mine in october, and its got 5k now: I've had intermittant problems with shifting (it pops out of 1st, and up- or down-shifting into 2nd is rough). But after a few good potholes the steering/handling really sucks: even after an alignment it's really loose and sloppy (maybe the bad struts from the '01s are still around? that might explain the popping/clicking noise when i'm parking). overall I'm happy, but the bad handliong (dealer says it just "breaking in") pisses me off: any ideas on how to spend a little money and get a car that actually handles like a new car? thanks
If any of you actually took care of a new car like a new car owner should... then you wouldn't have any problems. If you drive the thing like you don't give a damn about it then it's going to fall apart. Are you having some wild sex in the front seat? Is that why it is rocking? If you don't slam your back into the seat then that unneeded stress won't be put on the car. oh yeah... POTHOLES=BAD. No crap your steering would be affected after driving through potholes... basically what I'm saying...
COMMON SENSE PREVAILS! If you ever need any... lemme know.
Ok Jiffy, potholes are bad, but since not every one can be avoided, even if you try _really_ hard (like I do), then the question becomes "is it reasonable for a car with 2,000 miles on it to suddenly start handling like a drunken pig?". i say it isn't, and I'm starting to think that there is something wrong withe the front end. from reading other threads, it could be 1) the firestones, 2) bad struts, like the service bulletin for the 01 describes, or 3) something loose/broken on the lower control arm. anyone have any thoughts on this?
