Just some FYI www.tirerack.com will not sell you a 40 profile tire!!!

I ordered my kuhmo 712's to replace my crappy nitto's. The size i ordered was 205/40/17. Well today i get a call from tirerack telling me they cant sell a 40 profile tire for any of the 2k1civics. They say that profile doesnt bear enough weight for the 7th gen. I tell him i have 205/40/17's on the car now and he keeps asking me are you sure you have a 2001 civic with the new body style? Im like yes i think i know what car i drive. So anyways i had to go with the 205/45/17. Which is fine because the ride wont be as harsh now. So you guys with 205/40/17's might want to be careful with your tires because im sure this guy that deals with tires for a living knows what hes doing.

I have never heard such a thing.......has anyone else ??

He said that on 96-00 civic's 205/40/17 was fine. He said on the 01+ you had to go with a 45 series to handle the weight. Just going by what he said thats all.

i was a little concern when i got my 40 serie 17 ...but from i heard 45 serie is the correct radius for our car....but i think you should have the choice to go higher to 50 or lower to 40...i don't know...i have 40 series tire ...so if anyone know anything bad going to happen to me please me know ...other wise i'm enjoying my car looks...

Personally, I would have taken my money elsewhere. Besides, aren't the tires themselves marked with a load rating? You could determine what's appropriate yourself.

Blah wanted to use 205/40, heavier cars that use 40 profile tires are probably using 225, 235, or wider. Which would beetter support the weight. Also, each tire is different so maybe the Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 can't hold as much weight in 205/40 as say a Michelin Pilot (which is known to have a stiffer sidewall).

When I bought mine there I was told they would sell them but he didn't reccomend them due to wheel well gap and diameter was way off. I went with the 215/40/17 instead....

Peace,

Ozzy

dood, u should have just said, "oh ya, it is a 2000 civic", why does it matter what car you have to him? u want the tires and thats all there is to it. I had my 40's for at least 15 months with no probs, except they are worn now.

edit: oh ya, not to mention your car will be somewhat slower with the heavier tires

D

Thats alright about the car being a little slower. plus the 45 series will give me a better ride anyways. Im not mad about the 45 series just stating what they said.

Hey blah: I was checking out your Civic in members Rides. You've got a wicked drop going on. I have a little more mild drop and run 45s. I had some rubbing in the back and have to camber my rear just inside speck. What I'm trying to say is that I run 215/45 17s and have had some problems. So, when you get yours, let us know how it works out. I was planning to run 40s in about 15K miles. My Yokohama Avid H4s have about 24K on them now. They have treated me good. Let me know how it goes. Nice ride too by the way.

Hmm...that's weird. When I get my Civic, I'm gonna get a set of 17" Konig Rated R's. I'm getting Kumho 205/40/ZR17 tires from Rim1 for $80 apiece. I did a little research though, and using the "Tire Calc" on this site, those tires aren't much smaller than stock. I calculated it, and they are only small enough to throw the speedo of by 2Mph. That means that in order to be doing 55, you would have to drive 57 according to the speedo. It's all good, though, 'cause I usually drive somewhere around 60Mph...so I would actually be doing 58 which isn't enough to make a cop want to pull you over.

Who's to say that they weren't out of that size of tire and didn't want to lose the sale? Or maybe the sales people have an extra incentive to sale that particular model.
