Tint do's and dont's

Alright I searched every title that says tint and I didnt really see this so. I am going to get tint hopefully next weekend. So I want to go ahead and get this in my head. What are the do's and dont's of tint? Like what is best to clean the tint with? Can you use the defroster after you get it? How long should you wait before you roll the windows down? What is bad for the tint and good for it? Do you need to do anything too it once you get it back from the tint man? You know just questions like that. I know nothing about tint so all info is welcome, anything you guys know. Thanks for your help. To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

Most tint shops I have ever dealt with will give you a list of do's and dont's...basically stating this is going to screw the warranty if you do it.

As for cleaning, NO AMMONIA. Look for something that is either specifically for tint or for a windex that is ammonia free.

I believe you can't roll the windows down for 72 hours.

My defroster actually works faster now.

Nothing needs done after tint. Letting it sit in the sun though will help the small bubbles disappear. Normally they will have you come back after a week to check for bubbles.

Also, on my 05 the antenna is in the rear window with the defrost. They said that I should use a tint that does not contain metal...apparently some do. I have the darkest available and the antenna works fine. May want to tell them that if your antenna is located there as well.

You clean with soapy water or any clear that does not have ammonia in it. I use my defrosters and have no bubbles. I believe you wait at least a week. The only thing you do once you get it on is leave them up (you already know that).

Just something that will clean and it ammonia free. In the situation that you don't want to go buy a special cleaner

Yea, never ever ever use ammonia on your tint...just normal soap and water will do...wait AT LEAST 3 days to roll down your windows (they might say 2 days but take care of your investment and keep the windows up for one more day)...when you get it back from the tint guy, you can expect to see overspray or some other type of liquid residue that has dried on your windows/ tint...dont even worry about wiping that off for at least 3 days either...window tint is usually dirt and takes a while for it to dry out and be completely clear (sometimes this can take a few weeks)...

Good way to tell if you have a good tint shop...look at a car that has already been tinted (if possible)...look at the rear windshield...the tint should not be cut into multiple strips...also, you will notice that along the border of the stock windshield, there is something called a dot matrix...a really good tint shop will assure that the tint is completely flat against these dots.....next look at the drive or passenger side window (doesnt matter)...make sure the edges are not frayed and the cut along the edge of the window is even....and another good indicator (if your looking at a sedan) is the rear quarter window...shops mess this up for some reason and cant get all the edges to flatten out to the point where it wont look noticeable until you get up close and you can see that they didnt/couldnt get the edges down...

..newayz, hope that helped...

Does anyone have perfect covering over the dot matrix region? Cus I dont. Perhaps I should go complain, though its been almost a year since I got the tint. Has anyone delt with this before?

Don't: use anything with ammonia to clean it.

Do: Make sure you have a warranty. Some tint will bubble up fairly soon. Make sure to keep the warranty so you can have it replaced if it does.

My buddy's brother's good friend owns a tint shop and he is very very good at what he does. He hand cuts the tint out like a machine, very fast and very perfect.

I never use anything on my tint except water. Even with the highest quality tint, if you use some "tint safe" cleaners it will look somewhat purple or at least not as "smokey" as they were originally. It is hard to notice though and may not happen, but why take the risk, when water does the job, at least 99% of the time.

doesn't matter... tint shops recommend soapy water, but if all you have is fingerprints and dust, just water alone should do the trick...

But the million dollar questionabout tinting in a civic (namley my 01 coupe) is do you remove the rear speaker deck or not?

The deck sits flush with the window (where the 3rd brake light is) and thus, likely won't be tinted if you don't remove it...

I told the tint guy I would remove mine so that he wouldnt cut out around the brake light. So he cut $20 bucks off the price.

leave windows closed for 1 week, in the sun.

get tint when its above freezing 32F

clean inside with water and 100% cotton cloth

dont use defroster for first week

dont touch the tint

that is pretty much it!

Good tint shops do not have to remove the rear deck there is a trick they do. The guy told me he would sho me, but he did'nt, actually did not care that much. I mean, I cannot not ever see myself tinting a car, but it would have been interesting.

I am guessing hte just cut it long and slip it in there.
