Rep Power: 0 Honda: "Talking Car Terminal"
NTT, Honda make `talking' car terminal:
Offering a high-tech option for hungry, thirsty or simply busy drivers, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. and Honda Motor Co. recently announced they have developed a third-generation telematics system.
The system allows drivers to talk to computer terminals in their cars to get information about local eateries or other facilities and send e-mail while driving.
Telematics refers to a wireless network, usually connecting a vehicle, which supports the collection and dissemination of data.
The system uses NTT DoCoMo's third-generation mobile phone service, known as FOMA. The companies expect to begin marketing the new system next year.
The driver can talk to the terminal, which can respond with certain programmed information. For example, if the driver says he is hungry, the terminal, linked to a satellite-based global positioning system (GPS), can display a map on the terminal screen showing the area in which the vehicle is located. The terminal will ``speak'' to the driver, providing information about local stores and restaurants that have contracted with the system providers. Also, using previously input data as a guide, the terminal can also read aloud important sections of incoming e-mail messages, and the driver can send a simple reply while driving.
NTT and Honda began joint research on the system last November, with NTT handling the communications technology and Honda developing the automotive technology side, such as computerization of information on a moving car's location.

Interesting eh? By the way, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
