Is it just me or does it seem like 5th gear on a 5-speed 7th gen is just too short? I mean pulling close to 4000rmp goin 75 is just kinda sad. It does give i nice sporty feel to it. Floor it at 60 in 5th and ur goin 70 in no time, but don't ya think that runnin high RPMs like that on a long road trip would wear our engines out kinda fast? I visit my cousins in kentucky quite a bit and i wanna take my car up there next time to take out to this awesome track there (beach bends), but a 12 hour road trip pulling about 4000 all the way is a scary thought for me.

I have an automatic which has it's own issues... don't get me started...
Aannnyyway, I had a Toyota Corolla once and it was only a 4-speed. Just think how high my RPM's were on the highway. It sounded like the damn thing was gonna blow up. It also was an auto so I don't know how high those RPM's actually got but I know for a fact they were way over 4k. I think you are safe to be honest. These engines are designed around high RPM's. Although these transmissions have some flaws, I think the engines are strong. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
hmm i was going 103 in my auto and it was only at 4 grand i had a pic but not anymore
That ain't bad man. Like I said, at 60mph my Toyota was probably hitting 6-7k from the way it sounded. I still shake my head at that junk. I traded it in a few months later...
civics arent meant to break 80..well stock..but i mean i was just seeing what i could do..my friends friend clamed to have gotten his to 130...i think he had headers and intake...but i really doubt that

The 5-speed and automatic gear ratio's are different. The 5-speeds are closer than the auto's. I use to have an auto 7th gen, so i know through experience. 60 in 5th gear in an auto i think you're pullin like 2500 rpm, i think, and 70 at around 3000. In a 5 speed goin 60 ur pullin 3000. 70 > 3600+ Seeing the difference? In the auto 2nd gear toped out at 60, 5-speed's 2nd gear tops out at 50 or a lil below. I never got to find out what 3rd gear toped out in on the auto cuz North carolina state troopers are bad around here! Every been to NC and you'll know what i'm talking about. They wait at the NC state line for your ass!

I got mine up to 115mph racing an SI last week. Intake and exhaust. I doubt your friend too.
did you win?!?! thast tight you got it up..how fast did it take..and yeah i know some people are gonna read that and be like omg thats so funny..well you are all sickos

i dont mean to sound like a **** or anything, but is there a 5th gear for automatics? i thought the manual's were 5 speed and the automatics were 4 speed?
or are you referring to overdrive on the automatic?
i've gone over 100 in 4th gears b4...its like 5-6k rpms hitting near 7k...but i shifted cuz i was racing some fool in another 7th gen...which was an auto...he got smoked

I talked about this is the certified SI killer thread (i think it was that one). He just started messing with me and we both nailed it into 2nd, he got the jump on me but his fender was at my tail light from like 45-70 or whatever, i forget. But then he falls back, we dodge through traffic and hit it again. He's behind me, and i'm taking up both the lanes of the highway, just to keep him from getting ahead of me, which i'm sure he could have, duh, it's an SI! Back to the point, the car picked up nicely until about 100, then it took FOREVER to get to 115! I'm sure i could have gotten more but i had both my windows all the way down and the moon roof tilted. But i thought about it afterward and felt stupid for racing him. I'm sure he was behind me the whole time laughing his ass off.

i seriously dont know thats why im here to learn
An automatic has 5 gears too. You're thinkin it's 4 cuz it's called a 4 speed automatic. It's only called that because you can only really control 4 speeds with it:: Neutral, 2nd, 3rd, and drive. (N, 2nd, 3rd, D) But the tranny itself have 5 gears. Someone please correct me if i'm wrong
this has nothing to do with this thread, but i read somewhere (i forgot if it was here or another forum) that an auto IS300 would beat a manual IS300. the reason is because they both have 5 gears and the automatic will not have any driver errors(mishift, etc.)

Ive personally hit 130 in mine, then promptly let off, & all I have is an intake. So its not total BS. But the speedo is slightly incorrect at these speeds, so I/he was actually doing closer to 120 - 125.

I'm with you on that one. I spend a lot of time on the interstate at 3500 to 4000 and wish then it had a 6th gear. I had a z28 before I got the civic (big drop in power and speed) and for about the first 2 weeks I kept not paying attention and bringing it down toward reverse looking for the 6th gear I was use to. I guess with not enough power and having that much wind resistance at 80+ another gear would put a lot of strain on the motor. More so than the higher rpms.
You are wrong about the transmission. It has 4 gears to go forward in, hence, the "4 speed automatic" If it had 5 gears would be a 5 speed auto.
You sure about that? When i had my 01 lx auto i know it had 5 gears, cuz i counted them. Well, i counted the number of upshifts. There were 4 upshifts. 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5. See, 4 upshifts, but 5 gears. Maybe the "4 speed" comes from the number up upshifts. 5 speed automatic having 6 gears. Any other opinions?
well if it makes you feel any better, the k20a's 6th gear is the same as our 5th gear ... the only reason why their 6th gear is "longer" is because of the extra 1500 rpms that it can rev

wtf ... 4 speed autos have 4 gears. You don't call a 10 speed bike that because it has 11 gears
Back to the original question...
I think 5th is too short as well, at least for road trips. I was hitting over 4k rpm for 15hrs or so during my trip to CO, and it got old fast. I wouldn't worry about engine wear, just worry about your ears. My g/f's accord does 80mph at 3k rpm and it is better insulated, so we take that on road trips now.
I agree with that one. My brother's 6speed V6 Accord cruises at 2200 RPM at 80. We took it on a long road trip 2 weeks ago. It was sweet. It doesn't even breathe hard at 120! (God, I want one now) Then, after driving my Civic again, I really noticed how fast and loud the engine is at just 70! I doubt it'll ever hurt it, but now I wish I had that 6th gear. The engine also tends to vibrate a lot more around 4k. I doubt I really want to take long trips in the Vic.
Autocross: Because Life is more fun on three wheels......
"I know Solo only comes one minute at a time, but what an intense, non-stop, fast-forward car control exercise minute it is. Sure, the velocity is higher in road racing, but inside the car it is slow-motion in comparison. In Solo, the turns come like machine-gun rounds. "
