I live in Oklahoma City, born and raised. I've never lived anywhere else. My wife works for Estee Lauder and back in September they wanted to give her a promotion and move us to St. Louis. The timing didn't seem right, and she was wanting to hold out for a position in Dallas or somewhere in Texas. However, the position in St. Louis was never filled, and they're still asking if she would be interested. Does anyone have anything to say about St. Louis. Good place to live? Entertainment? We're both from Oklahoma, and we're ready to try something different. What do you guys think about St. Louis?

I think St. Louis is a little more fast paced from Oklahoma. Its a good city to live in and has all types of people. The entertainment is great, from sports to arts and theatre... whatever you want, St. Louis has it. What other factors are important to you? Do you have children, are you looking for an apartment or a house? The areas of St. Louis are very different (demographics) as in the class of people in certain areas, especially city vs. county.
I was born in St. Louis and spent most of my life there, but haven't lived there my entire life, so I have a lot of other places to compare it to.
Well, I grew up in Oklahoma, but my mother's family is from New York. I also spent alot of time there while growing up, so I'm used to the fast paced world. So, that's not a problem. I do have two kids, so I would like to move to a nice area. My wife will be making pretty good money with her promotion, and I have an accounting degree with a few years of experience, so I should be able to find a decent job. I was thinking about renting for a little while and possibly build a new home. I would be looking for an area that is probably middle to middle-upper class. Any suggestions?
St. Louis itself is not a great place to live, you want to live in one of the burbs. I'd prefer an Illinois burb, but then again, I'm biased. St. Louis is great if like sports, we have the Riverport Ampitheatre, and theres a good amount of entertainment. On the sports subject, we were rated the #1 sports town in America a few years back.
What sort of price range do you consider upper-middle class? In not too long (as soon as my parents agree on a floorplan) we're moving to a new subdivision, the houses start at about $200,000 and work up from there. There is a subdivision called Ravenwood if you wanna start at about $350,000. Its very nice. The houses are huge, and all surround a lake. If you like Golfing, there is Stonewolf, which was designed by Jack Nichalas (sorry, I don't know the spelling of his name.) They start at about $180,000. There are a lot of other subdivisions around here that are very nice aswell. I would suggest an illinois subdivision because its just a more calm place.
My town's claim to fame is the 2nd busiest intersection in illinois. Its the intersection of 159 and 50. On one of the corners is a mall that is anchored by Sears, JC Penny, Dillards, and Famous & Barr. In St. Louis (20 min drive) there is the galleria also if you like shopping.
If you've got any other questions, feel free to ask.
Hey, how far are the Illinois suburbs from St. Louis? I forgot about how close St. Louis was to the Illinois border. That might be an idea to look into. Those price ranges you listed are probably a good start. It's going to depend on what job I get as well. Although, with the money my wife would be making, if I could just find a fairly decent job, then we would easily be making in the six figures. Anyways, let me know how far a drive it would be from an Illinois burb to St. Louis.
Also, just for reference, does anyone know of any nice suburbs southwest of St. Louis?

If you have money like that.... Go for West County. I don't know what classifies as SW, but look into Ballwin, Manchester, Chesterfield, Ladue, any of those areas would start around $150K. Best school district in St. Louis area, Rockwood School District. About 30 minutes from St. Louis (downtown), but not a really bad commute.
