I'm planning to switch a thicker oil. Would I do any harm to my engine by switching ? Summer is coming up and I live in Los Angeles. I'm planning on using the chevron brand.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

What's the point?

As said here before, you aren't smarter than the engineers that designed the engines and spec'd the oil.

Use what's stamped on the oil cap (5w20).

Honda says we can run 0w20 in them too, which makes for easier starts in extreme cold, along with slightly better fuel economy.

The engine doesn't care about summer or winter (unless it's in extreme cold...Canada has some extreme cold)
The engines operating temperature is 180-200+ in any weather.

You don't even have real weather extremes out there LOL

5w30 and 10w30 are typically some of the cheapest oil to make, using the lowest quality oil base stocks on the market. That makes them some of the highest profit generating products. Therefore they aremarketed the most.

You can cause increased oil consumption.
You can cause decreased fuel economy

JMHO, YMMV
