Why the a2 is the a2?

Okay so I own an em2 and em1. I was wondering where the a2 part comes from...like don't get me wrong I understand the difference between the a1 non-vtec and the a2 vtec-e cylinder heads but I don't see the correlation between that and my b16a2 at all, I pondered it having to do with the stock air boxes or intake manifolds like the d16y8 but was just wondering if some one could shed light on why there called an a2 outside of the cylinder heads because I don't see the relation, I searched the forum and didn't see anything sorry if it's been covered.

Re: Why the a2 is the a2?

Re: Why the a2 is the a2?

why the b16a2 and d17a2 share the a2 portion, and what it means.

Re: Why the a2 is the a2?

There is not much correlation between the engine codes.
Yes, the Y8 IM will fit the D17 with possible slight modifications.
They're just codes, K20a2 has about the same differences to a D17a2 as it does a B16C.
Just code destinations mainly for differentiating between variations in to the same engine. (Like blue to sky blue)
No need to take them to heart.

Re: Why the a2 is the a2?

apologies just knew that certain parts of codes usually mean something different like the vin. Surprising to find out my car was built 30 miles away lol

Re: Why the a2 is the a2?

They are region codes. I dont remember the whole breakdown, but thats why all JDM engines are just a letter no number since they are for the japanese market i.e. B18C, B16A, H22A.

Taken from asia.vtec.net

The engine code for export engines are more varied. Honda normally appends a number to the four-character code so the B16A engines for example for various export markets might be coded B16A1 or B16A5 (eg US or UK markets). Another example would be the B20A2 code for export Honda CR-Vs, where the JDM versions would have a plain B20A code.
