Changing Oil Pan Gasket '94 Civic 1.5L - DIY inside

My neighbor has noticed lately a slight oil smell around the outside of her car, a 1994 Civic DX (1.5 liter engine). She took it to a reputable shop (not a dealer) and they determined that the oil pan gasket might be the culprit. The estimate was $225 for parts and labor. We have a mutual friend who is an experienced mechanic and he has agreed to replace the gasket. We picked up a Fel-Pro OS 30542 R oil pan gasket and Wix 51334 oil filter, along with 10W30 synthetic oil (5 quarts, one extra if needed).

Another friend mentioned that we should consider replacing the front & rear "main" seals as long as the oil pan gasket was getting changed. He is not the one who will be doing the work and I'm not sure of his experience with Honda engines.

I wanted to check here to see if there were any tutorials or DIY guides for the oil pan gasket.

Thank you!

Re: Changing Oil Pan Gasket '94 Civic 1.5L

easy, unbolt exhaust and move out of way.

Drain oil

Unbolt pan

clean pan out and get all grease/oil off it.

make sure bottom of block is clean with no oil

apply Hondabond to the mating points on the block of the Rear Main seal plate and oil pump.

Lay gasket onto oil pan and raise it into place.

Hand tighten the 4 corner nuts

Starting with the middle back bolt, LIGHTELY snug up each bolt in a counter or clockwise rotation. This takes a few times around the pan until they all are tight.

The gasket shouldn't squeeze out form between the pan and block, maybe a touch, but not much at all.

Thanks! I also found this YouTube [autostream]http://autostream.com/ibcivicforums/?page_type=firebirdplayerthumbnail&framepage=1440& transactionid=1379702641-501598344&posted_by=_www.civicforums.com&youtube_v ideo_id=TEXni_OAmKA[/autostream] which is very helpful and covers what you just said. The oil pan removal starts at around 10 minutes ("Nthefastlane" is also sealing the exhaust system).
