upper solenoid gasket

Hi Everyone,
I have a slight leak on my daughters 1999 Civic EX sedan (4AT).

I think I've narrowed it to the solenoid gaskets. Apparently there are two gaskets. the bottom one looks like a snowman with a screen in it and the upper one looks like a figure 8. I found the snowman gasket but I cannot seem to get a part number for the upper gasket. A guy on YouTube replaced his gaskets on a '98 civic and said that this upper gasket (36172-P08-015) is the one that works with the D16Y8 engine. that's my engine but my local dealership cannot break down the part numbers for the individual gaskets. They want me to buy the entire solenoid which comes with the 2 gaskets. Go figure! Can anyone verify that the upper gasket is this part number for me?

Thank you
Scott

Re: upper solenoid gasket

This is the diagram they look at. No individual part number for that specific gasket, unfortunately. Just the spool valve filter assembly (snowman with a screen -- #11 on the diagram). Best bet is to find one at a pick-a-part or ebay.. Worst case scenario, make a gasket

Re: upper solenoid gasket

To find the part number for the upper gasket you must look up a much older car.....if your dealer looks up the same item for a 95 Civic they should be able to find it....
then they will tell you you will still own it if it isn't correct.

6th and 7th gen CIVIC
VTEC takes upper gasket for 5th gen, Honda part #36172-P08-015

Re: upper solenoid gasket

If the upper gasket doesn't solve the leak then the Vtec solenoid is most likely warped. Use Hondabond or black RTV on the snowman gasket carefully (to avoid screen) should fix the leak. I've had to do this on two different 6th gen EX's and it worked both times when the gasket alone would leak.
Make sure to torque the bolts to spec.

Re: upper solenoid gasket

Megalodong< I'll give that a try! It is now Jan. 2018, and the damn thing started leaking again. I did some YouTube research and someone there suggested that if the seals were still leaking, that I should pay attention to replacing the PCV valve as it is most likely defective. his thoughts were that there is an excessive amount of pressure therefore causing the engine to leak at the most vulnerable places.
