If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Check your oil. Is it full?
Is it consuming oil?
Same checks for coolant/radiator/overflow. Is the radiator full?
Is the reservoir at the max line? (that level will change a lot depending on engine temperatures)
Does the radiator fan operate correctly?

blue smoke- oil
white smoke- coolant
turn the car on and let it run till it warms up, and check you radiator. if your getting a lot of bubbles- head gasket
check your oil if its like a milky color, kinda like diluted chocolate milk, - head gasket and probably piston rings at the least
