Clutch quit working overnight 2000 civic

Hope someone can help me out. Car has 296000KM (185000 Miles)Clutch was starting to chatter slightly when taking off in first gear. This has been going on for a few months. Friday when I left work I had trouble getting the car in gear not realizing the clutch was slightly engaged. Drove home (30 Miles) no incident. Next morning I started the car and couldn't get it in reverse so I shut it off, put it in reverse, restarted the car and drove it about 15 miles. When I returned home the clutch was definitely not dis-engaging completely and the pedal seemed soft. It doesn't seem to be slipping when I excelerate so I was wondering if the clutch was still good but the mechanism to dis-engage it was faulty. I don't understand how a hyraulic clutch works. Can someone help me with the diagnosis?
Thanks
Jeff

Re: Clutch quit working overnight 2000 civic

No Hydraulic fluid in clutch system so I'm going to bleed it and look for the leak.

Ok, so the reservois was empty and when I bled the system the fluid seemed quite dirty. Emptied the Reservois about 3 times until fluid looked relatively clear. Pedal came back and seemed to hold pressure while bleeding. So, either there is a very small leak or the clutch has worn down enough to displace all the fluid. I'm guessing that its a combination of both. I couldnt find a leak along the lines but I noticed an oily substance in the cabin by the pedal. It wasn't wet at all so I'm not sure if it was hydraulic fluid or not. Car test drove ok with no problem putting it into gear. Guess I'll try it for a few weeks and report back later.

Keep us posted as the week goes on. Look for signs of slippage while driving. You may have a leaking cylinder. Sucks you couldn't identify the fluid, but that would be my best guess.
