To swap or not to swap, that, is the question.

I have a 97 civic lx with a d16y7. I'm not sure if I should replace the engine or not. I can rebuild it if it is cheaper. Not me personally but pay for someone to rebuild it. It has over heated on me a couple times but it still runs although it takes a while to start. It has a check engine light of course. It has new tires new battery and that's about it. I'm sure it needs a new radiator and what not. The paint sucks. I don't have a garage where I can mess with it (oh how I wish I did). Any estimates of the swap and rebuild would b helpful. I'm in CALIFORNIA. I do want to keep it if I can, but if it's just going to be expensive then I'd rather get rid of it. My goal is to have a car to drive not so many issues and a warranty for the work done. My budget is no more than 1000. Thanks for reading

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Double or triple the budget if you really expect all that.
Realistically, $1000 is not much to work with at a reputable shop. Good luck.

Consider just fixing the head gasket and warped head instead of a complete engine. Along with the timing belt, since it sounds like it's never been replaced.
You might find a shop to do that much for $1k.
Didn't that need rocker stand seals too? Now would be the time to do those.
