Fix it myself, or machine shop?

In attempting to replace the valve cover gasket on my '99 LX this weekend, I managed to break off one of the valve / head cover bolts (the front center) and strip out the threads on the mount for another (rear driver's side). I was going to try taking a left handed drill to the broken bolt (it's broken off at the threaded end) and doing a Helicoil job on the stripped out mount.

How much risk of killing my engine is there if I do this myself?

I work at a welding shop and have seen some bad stuff but I would send it away and get it done proper
