97 dx fuel issue

My daughters 97 DX is leaking from the canister on the firewall directly below the fuel filter. I do not know why it is doing this as there seems to be a drain at the bottom of the canister to dump fuel.
Not yet achieving a economic status where I can afford to spill gasoline on my driveway this needs to stop. What must I correct ?
I have a Haynes Car manual, how ever it did not feel the need to respond to such a problem in their text. I have since set the manual up as a target for my sons shooting range in order to receive some value from its purchase.
I am thank you in advance for your help.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Re: 97 dx fuel issue

THAT was funny. Good job.

I'm gonna guess that someone just filled the gas tank, and instead of quitting when the nozzle shuts off, you keep adding until the tank is completely full OR keep adding until a couple more dollars fit in it.

This floods the canister with liquid gasoline and you shouldn't do that. The gas tank is designed to have an air space inside, not be completely filled.
