Need some help Regarding P1163 error code!!

Eight months ago, when i first bought this car(1999 honda civic HX), I had to replace oxygen sensor(upstream) on this car. I bought the OEM NTK wideband O2 sensor. A month ago the check engine light came on. So I scanned the code and found out that the error code read P1163, which is HO2S11 Slow Response. Since i bought the car i have only put ~11,000 miles on it and from what I have heard is that O2 sensors usually lasts till 50,000 miles. But anyways i reset the code and it was fine for like a month(drove for 1100 miles) and yesterday it came back on again. The guy at autozone told me to replace the downstream sensor as well because that might trigger error code as well.

So my question is that do I have a faulty upstream O2 sensor or do I really have to replace my downstream sensor as well? Or what else could be the problem

I read it in the forum below that putting after market wheel could trigger a false alarm.
http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2242027

Ps. The car does have exhaust manifold leak, has been lowered and has 17" rims (dont know if that adds up to the prob )

Thanks for any help

Re: Need some help Regarding P1163 error code!!

If the exhaust manifold leaks, I would certainly fix that first.
That is an obvious problem that can affect O2 readings.
It can let fresh air get in and skew the sensor readings, bias them lean.
Braze or weld the crack, or replace the entire thing?

If that doesn't fix it, then do a search for Honda bulletin 00-028.
Only for HX Civics 1998-2000, "ECM is too sensitive to driver input", a modified/updated/countermeasure PCM was the fix.
A standard original replacement ECM or a reman of an original will not fix it.
PM me if you need more info about this bulletin.

I'm not sure I believe the wheel theory.....but I know they can affect odd things. More rolling resistance = more load on the engine.

I don't believe the rear sensor theory at all.
I would ignore almost everything that the Zoo employees tell you. If the people there could actually fix cars, they wouldn't be parts ******. (Same goes for most tow truck drivers.) They probably get a commission from all the parts they sell, so that is the motivation for selling you the fully loaded parts cannon, loaded with the cheapest parts they can source from China. They don't give a flying rats azz about actually fixing your car.

Re: Need some help Regarding P1163 error code!!

I have seen an exhaust leak cause this code on Hyundai's, not on a Honda.
But you probably want to get that taken care of first ^^^^

this is from Honda, if not an exhaust leak causing it. this is most likely your problem.
