Re: Fuel issue
You shouldn't take smelling gas lightly at all.
Do your do diligence when you smell gas try to track it down look for leaks and wet spots. It's dangerous stuff if your car is leaking gas. I took a leaking gas tank too lightly a few years ago and got schooled. If you car is leaking gas on a city street. The fire dept. will hose down your car and impound it afterward. Where I live anyway.

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: Fuel issue
If you are in the rust belt, the tanks and/or steel lines in the rear and under the car rust out.
