Rep Power: 0 Worth it to replace Timing Belt at 180,000 miles?
I have a 99 Civic LX with 173,000 miles and no known mechanical issues (knock on wood.)
The timing belt was last replaced at somewhere between 90K and 100K miles 5-6 years ago, and the mechanic strongly recommends replacing it at 180K miles.
I plan to keep this car for about 3 years, 220K miles, or if the next repair exceeds $1000, whichever of these 3 comes first.
Is it worthwhile to replace the timing belt in the near future or am I better off shunning it and "risking" it on a vehicle with so many miles? I already have enough cash in the bank to buy a new car (at least a new Civic) but I don't feel like spending it until I absolutely have to.

3 years is a long time, one mishap with the belt and timing and the engine could be hooped, however, at the end of the day it all comes down to what you want to spend. A timing belt replacement will run a cost of roughly $500 (that's my estimate, i don't know for sure). By replacing it would justify a feeling of 'security' in a sense for your engine. It's all up to you buddy. Honestly you're best bet, in my opinion (assuming you have the money for the new car) is to sell the car now and get as much as possible from it, and then buy yourself a fancy new honda. Your civic will not be worth as much in 3 years to put it obviously. Selling it now even with a belt replacement now will ultimately save you more money in the long run. Up to you!

If the belt breaks then you will break/bend a valve. That would probably put you over the $1000 mark, which means you would be buying a new car. (They never break at a convenient time or place either) Spend $500 now to replace it and have peace of mind for 3 years. It could break next week, or in 3 years no one knows. $500 divided by 36 months is $14. Can't get a car for that kind of payment.
