1997 dx civic 1.6 surging idle

I did a complete overhaul of my engine. changed rings, connecting rod bearings, timing belt, water pump, tensioner, new head gasket. After performing all of that, also new antifreeze added and flushed, after that, im getting idle surging. can you guys direct me to a thread that would show me how to fix the idle surge problem that i have. i know someone else must have gone thru this already. i just need to be directed in the right direction.

i also noticed that there's no bleed screw to bleed off air of the coolant system. you have to squeeze the hose for that. while i was working on getting the money to buy parts, the car has been seating for about a month.

can surging happen if there's air in the coolant system?

i just cant find anything that deals with my problem. I'm new by the way.

thanks for the help guys.

Yes, air in the coolant system can cause the idle to surge. Try turning to heater to full heat (turned off), open the radiator cap and fill it up. Run the car and keep filling the radiator until it stays full and no more bubbles come out. Make sure the reservoir is full too, then close both caps and see if the idle has changed.

Re: 1997 dx civic 1.6 surging idle

thanks for the reply sir. I just cleaned the aic valve. tighten a nut to the intake that was loose. the aic valve was completely full of carbon. clean it all out. hopefully that will work. just waiting on some small coolant hoses from honda. i'll keep you guys posted just in case anyone has the same problem i had. thanks again.

Why do you need to replace the coolant hoses? I have surging issues to sometimes when I start my car again after a hot drive. it either hesitates and doesn't start or it will finally start and surge RPMs from 2-3 thousand. i too cleaned my IACV but it didn't help much, probably just prevented a worse issue later

Re: 1997 dx civic 1.6 surging idle

I'm just changing the coolant hoses because when I was removing the iac valve to clean it, I just went ahead and changed it since they were a little degread it. I hope that the aic valve works. because I have checked basically all hoses, intake gasket replaced new. so when I put back everything, hopefully that will work. any other suggestions you guys might have that I might have missed? thanks again.

Re: 1997 dx civic 1.6 surging idle

Oddly enough i replaced my fuel filter because my hayne manual suggests it should be changed every 30K and i don't know if it has ever been replaced. And my car no longer surges.. i still have slightly high RPMs occasionally, but my car starts everytime now. i think i got the cheap one from death zone for $20 and it took only 20 minutes maybe to swap. also of note... i shook the gas out of the old filter and it came out dark drown. glad it was at least cleaning the gas i guess.
