Here's what happens: after the car gets warmed up, it seems to not shift back into first at a stop. I have to put it in second to get going. Sometimes, there's slipping and grinding sounds, but all of the trouble seems to be first gear. I've been told I have to replace the whole transmission. Is there not a cheaper way, say, fix the first gear? I don't know how trannies work, but the mechanic made it sound like if he opens it, I might as well just get a new one or have him rebuild it.
