I drive my handicapped sister all over, all the time, as a passenger. I use the keyless fob, unlock the doors, help her into the passenger seat, and right about then, something in the protocols locks MY ( driver's ) side door! So I go around and try to get in and it's locked!
And when I just push the fob at other times, I want to unlock ALL the doors, NOT have to keep pushing it, to unlock the next one and the next one so that I can put something in the back seat.
What geniuses came up with this system for the keyless door locking protocols? And is there ANY way to change this, so it will JUST lock or unlock ALL the doors and KEEP them that way until we get into the car?

It should be 1st unlock press = drivers door only, & 2nd unlock press = remaining doors.
The system will relock (all doors) if it does not see a door open after set time interval.
If you are needing to press more then the 2nd unlock.... you may have some weak actuators.
And make sure your dome works with each individual door.

Yes, I know all that from using it, but it's very frustrating to not open all the locks at once, and have it relock the drivers side while I just opened the door to get my sister in. ( something like 15 seconds after I open the passenger side door! ).
CAN it be changed to just open or lock all, and to leave them the way I set them?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: 2002 civic keyless protocols?
Door jamb switch is bad or broken?
The system never saw a 'door open' input from the open door, so it relocks the car in about 30 seconds.
(assuming factory system on an EX)

If we get a keyless alarm system installed, will it override all this junk?

Re: 2002 civic keyless protocols?
Why would it lock, 30 seconds after I just opened it?
Maybe you trust everyone, but I don't.

Aftermarket alarm installed, probably $3-400 and still pisses you off.
Replacement door jamb switch, less than $6 MSRP.
Part# 35400-S5A-013
Takes a screwdriver and about 2 minutes to change one.
Factory stuff will work as designed again.

No, many aftermarket alarms will do the same thing if you won't fix the broken jamb switch.

Now I run into the mechanic specialization problem. I have a great mechanic but he doesn't do body work and I doubt electrical either.
Is the door switch easy to replace myself? ( never mind - just saw the bottom of your post )
Oh, on the alarm system, 6 mo ago we were quoted $230 for alarm and keyless, including remote start, which sounds nice for when it's 5 degrees out.

I just Googled: honda civic 2000 door jamb switch front passenger
to try to verify and don't see that number.

but actually probably that 30 seconds, if you count the time from unlocking with the fob.
Oh, how do you find these numbers, please? Would be very handy to know.

Try googling my part number instead.
I did and got plenty of hits.......
First link I saw was to an ebay listing that was far more expensive than Hondas MSRP, so watch out.
( not to mention our bank account )
Is that available to us online?
Same catalog as what I use for the most part, but most are not as user friendly IMO.
I usually use this one for posting the diagrams in this site

All 4 doors use the same switch on that car.

And you were gonna drop a pile of money on an alarm with remote start just because this cheap little switch is broken.
No, but there are plenty of dealerships selling parts online that have the parts catalog available (many are selling at wholesale prices). Also, shipping fees from some can negate any price savings, so be careful.

Just picked it up here. Not worth shopping around for any better than this:

It's only $5.83 (MSRP) from any honest dealer.

So it's fine if all the other doors are locked when I'm getting gas, but it's a pain when I let my sister in and it goes and locks the driver's side door while I'm doing it.
Not sure how to balance those things out.

Re: 2002 civic keyless protocols?
I've actually seen videos of what they call "sliders" nowdays, where a woman is filling up the tank and some guys pull up on the other side, slide out, open the car door and take her purse, then the getaway driver hauls out of there.
So it's fine if all the other doors are locked when I'm getting gas, but it's a pain when I let my sister in and it goes and locks the driver's side door while I'm doing it.

If something in your purse pushed a button and the car unlocked without you knowing, would you prefer it to stay unlocked out on the street or in a parking lot?
The gas station crime hype above has nothing to do with it.

You asked why the system is designed to relock the car in 30 seconds, and I gave you a scenario that necessitates relocking the car automatically.

But it was a good thing that I gave it to my mechanic to do, along with a new thermostat and oil change. It turned out that the switch had fallen apart and he had to take the seat belt out and the door stuff, to get to the cable and replace it.
