Wiring problem..

here's the problem..

I just got a (GEX-P20HD) HD radio thing.. it require me to hook it up to a Positive terminal in the battery somewhere.. I don't know how to get to the battery power source.. I know there's 2 way to do this..

1. either connected directly to the battery (+) charge from the side or some hole somewhere...
- i dont know how to get there & how to hook such a small wire to a big battery like that..

2. I can get it hook up with the fuse box.. but the problem is I dont know how to do it or what tool to use/buy..

- Can my car use this to hook it with the battery?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/12V-12-VOLT-30-40A-SPDT-RELAY-w-SOCKET-WIRE-HARNESS_W0QQitemZ220382121985QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMo tors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item334fcc50 01&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245

- Is there something less complicated than this direction? http://www.ehow.com/how_2187545_up-a...evice-car.html

I'm so stuck what should i do...?

I just started the car things.. if there's a post that ask this already please direct me to it..

I've been researching for 10 hours + going around stores asking RadioShack, Walmart, BestBuy, Fry employeess.. and they all so helpless.. the only person who actually answer to my question is some tinting/alarm/stereo store.. the answer was "connect this wire to a positive power source"....

I also got some interior lightings coming and i think it use the same 12V thing.. I'm not a electrical engineer so im not really sure what Amps are.. Please please give me some picture..... i think if someone show me their interior lighting with wiring.. that may REALLY REALLY help..

Re: Wiring problem..

A good lower current constant voltage source would be at the wiring for the head unit (yellow wire for most aftermarket units but not all) Pioneer does use yellow. The factory constant voltage wire at the head unit is WHT/RED fused for 10 amps.

Sadly getting the dash pod out to access the wiring can be a challenge though.

Re: Wiring problem..

can i see some picture..? of how it should look like..? why can't it be just plug and play -_- so hard.. lol

so should i even buy that harness + fuse thing..?

*edit*
gargss!! im up again studying about electricity so I do this.. >.<

The HD radio has 2A sticker on its fuse.. so im guessing its 2Amps.. this is what im planning to do.. let me know what you guys think...

1.drill a hole in the driver side/firewall if i can find where it is tomorrow..

2.run a wire through that hole.. have a fuse at the end of it..
*connect the wire directly into the battery..*

3.from that fuse ill wire it in to a switch..(optional)

4. from that switch ill make some outlet.. something like those outlet we use in our home but only for positive terminal..

5.1 connect my HD radio into that outlet
5.2 connect other 12v things into that outlet..
5.3 connect a wire into that outlet

6. connect a switch to that wire

7. from that switch ill connect my lightings/LED into that outlet..

Do i need any relay(im not even sure what it is) or anything?? im scare the car battery would be too strong and will blow my things up..?

after this ima install a car alarm.. 0_0

I wish our car has some dam electrical outlet so i can just PLUG and PLAY!!! I swear to god if this work.. ima make a DIY with a crapload of pictures.. I KNOW this is really hard and NO ONE has made a guide for this CUZ i've been searching everywhere!!

Re: Wiring problem..

It is just a low current required for the memory and stuff.

If you go through the firewall make sure to use a rubber grommet to keep from cutting insulation and causing a short.

Too low of a draw to require relay.

I would pull the pod out and tap in behind stereo.

Re: Wiring problem..

ey.. just updating on this.. if anyone care.. i got it to work perfect muahhaahaha.. they sell these "FUSE adapter" thing.. but some weird ass reason they're REALLY hard to find..

what you do is pull out the fuse.. like some 7.5A fuse.. like your Radio fuse.. or day light.. or something..

have that adapter help extend the fuse out..

the rest you just need to do yourself.. pretty ez.. IF you have the tools..

tell me if this help anyone

--------------------------------

also because of multiple trial and error i some how made my own "switch box" for 12v things.. it got 5 plugs.. and it comes directly from the car battery..

if someone give a dam ill upload the pics >.< i feel like everyone know about this except me.. >.<

Re: Wiring problem..

Hey that's a pretty cool way of doing things.

If you ever do decide to add something else, running wire to the battery really isn't that hard and if you do it right, you don't even have to drill any holes in your firewall.

You can buy inline fuse holders (Up to 30A blade type) with some 12AWG (usually) wire on either end, perfect for smaller applications like this. You just connect either end to some power wire, and hook the power wire to your battery with the fuse ~6 inches away (New battery terminals are the best way to do this, but you can also use ring terminals on the wire and use the bolt on the existing battery terminal to secure it in place). The other end goes to your device.

There is a rubber grommet in the firewall where the stock wiring comes through. It has a big rubber plug sealing it in place. I just poked a tiny hole through it with a clothes hanger, and pulled my wiring through that. The bigger wire being forced through the smaller hole seals it up nicely too. (Side note: You never want to run something through the firewall without sealing it)

Anyway, here's a pic of my 4AWG power wire running from my battery, you can see how I used a ring terminal to connect it to the battery post.

Re: Wiring problem..

haha thats so similar to mine now.. but i dont have that blue thing you got there.. kinda cool looking.. i just have a straight wire from the battery run along the side of my car.. through a little hole on the driver side door.. and i made my own little switch box.. keke..

wire from the battery.. w/ yellow terminal ring..

the inside.. i use the inside of the box as ground.. iono if that guna effect anything.. >.<

the on/off switch..

input/output terminals.. i got the output too.. look just like the input except one pos+ and one neg-

made my own switch box.. from some electronic/modem/comunication company trash.. and 1 years in physic help me do this.. -_- so lame..

oh they sell something similar to what i have in pep-boys!!! w/ 4 different switch!! i was so ticked off i went through so much finding and making what i have and they just have one on the shelf.. for $29.99.. its in the light section.. NOT the "electronic/fuse" section.. so lame.. -_-

Re: Wiring problem..

When tapping from the battery (or any source) you need a fuse inline near the power connection made.

Absolutely! This is very important. A fuse prevents you from melting the wire and potentially starting a fire in your vehicle, among other problems.

To the original poster:
That's what that "blue thing" you're talking about in my pictures is. You need one.

From the looks of your power wire, something like this for $2.69 + a 20 or 30 amp fuse will do.
Fuse Holder:

30 Amp Blade Type Fuse:

Re: Wiring problem..

Ah.. i see.. i got like crap load of those laying around.. but not that cool blue one >.< I thought i only need a fuse on the output of the other devices..

I got some more questions..

- why does it have to be 6 inch away.. ?
- couldn't it be somewhere else..?
- can i put higher than 30 AMP fuse on my fuse holder (if there such thing) ..?
- When i put a fuse on that line directly from the battery, will i need to install other fuses for my other 12v devices..?
- just for security can i put MULTIPLE fuse in 1 line just for the safety of my car..? (because i got alot of fuse things you guys kinda scare me about burning my car)..

Some OTHER question about wiring.. what type of resistor would i need to allow my LED light to last long..? (i heard the light burn out faster without them) its for the TOP door light..

and thanks for that informative answer

Re: Wiring problem..

You should always have the fuse as close as possible to the source connection. Any wire between source and fuse is unprotected.

If you use too large of a fuse it defeats the purpose of even having a fuse. If all you are using it for is memory, it would be a very small current draw needed.

Can't really have too many fuses but as long as they are the correct size it should be fine.

The diode bulbs should be designed to work on 12 volts, some are of poor quality and won't last long.
