but not the giant lumps that would be there =(

doesnt matter, its too late now. the people trying to emulate you would have just bolted on top-mounted hinges anyways, even if you had rabbeted out space to flushmount a top-mount hinge.

unfortunately, I typed spring when I meant hinge.

I can always run the carpet over them and only have the actual hinge part showing.

it looks like your sub box is causing the mdf board to sag in the pictures, have you thought of putting some kind of support under it?

hey diskreet just wanted to say thanks for the idea on this! i did it a few weeks ago and i love it! ive been posting my pics all over the forum like crazy cuz im hella proud of it! lol...but anyways i just wanted to post in here since you guys are talking about hiding the hinges and ^about the sagging issue.

first heres the pics

we put all the pieces in the car, uncarpetted, then attached the rear middle section to each side section with a bracket. like this

that will take care of a lot of the sagging. in fact i was laying in my trunk for quite a few hours last weekend because i was installing trunk shocks and it held fine...didn't sag any because of my weight.

then instead of carpetting each piece of the floor, once i had the brackets^ installed, i carpetted the entire floor as one. then, all you have to do it take a razor blade and slit where it should open for the spare tire access. the hinges will be hidden completely - no need to expose them.

although, i don't have the spare in the space provided. i use it to put my school books and stuff that i don't want rolling around in the trunk. im going to cut and carpet another piece of wood in order to make a back wall to the hidden area so nothing goes too far back that i can't reach it.

Its from before I had the system installed like I do now. I used the same pieces and now they do not sag at all. Its perfectly flat.

manthatguysfast, that looks amazing. excellent job!

are you asking how much carpet to buy? the roll i bought from was 4ft wide and i got 10 feet of it. if you're going to carpet i'd get 11ft though, i had to splice some pieces together and if i had just a bit more it woulda worked better.

thanks for the props diskreet!

I am doing this DIY but I am going to have my hinges hidden or just lift up the floor. I was wondering how long is the first peice of floor? The peice you lift up to get to the spare tire. Also do you have room to get the spare out or is tight.

Thanks

Honda01 will become famous soon enough Honda01 will become famous soon enough
any suggestions on what type of carpet and glue to use?
or perhaps a quick lesson in carperting it??

I made a floor like this for my old 91 civic, but the carpet I chose was bad, it pulled apart easily, and it didn't look the best as I didn't know how to properly carpet it...
