So I saw where some guy got a professional Garage to fab him a mount for his PSP in an old Lexus. The location was ass.(Behind the stick shift)
I feel I can do better in a better car. I just bought an 03 Coupe LX, and have had it for about 4 days, and have been aching to mod it in some way.
So here's the plan, and what I've already started.
-Take dash apart (Done with minimal breakage)
- Re-locate stereo to the glove compartment.(Not done, buying new stereo friday)
- Remove Cubbyhole (Done)
- Fabricate plate that fits in the hole for the stereo and cubbyhole(done, took a while to get an exact pattern)
- Build mount on said plate with a 1/2" plexi sheet, and installing an INtec docking station (tomorrow's work)
- Build Earphone to RCA jack cables to connect PSP remote to the Aux on stereo.(done)
- solder car charger wires to the charger behind the dash and run it up to the mounting plate.(not done)
- Mount as perminent fixtures, the Charger plug and the MP3 player remote, into the Intec docking station.(Doing tomorrow)
- Extend wires on the MP3 remote and install it in the arm rest in the center console.
For anyone wondering about my qualifications since I'm new here. I'm a sign fabricator, so I do alot of metalwork, acrylic work, and neon bending as well as wiring. I feel capable, so I'm going to leave a worklog/howto.
tomorrow I should get up a pattern of the shape of the hole left by the factory stereo/cubbyhole(or actually just a scan of the plate at 300 dpi). No easy task getting that just right, seemed easy enough just to use a 6" wide role of tape and trace it, but I armor-alled my dash, so it wouldn't adhere, my initial pattern was off a little(too big) due to shifting around, but after 3 pieces of plexi and manual adjusting, I got the shape just right.
I'll definately get pictures up. Just wasn't much to look at today since I put my dash back together before I left the shop and all I have is a 3/16" thick plate of acryllic(that still has the plastic on it) that fits into that hole.
Anyway, the problem I ran into when I recently relocated a headunit into the glovebox of an Audi was that it's a pain in the balls to keep opening the glove box to switch stations or songs. The solution I had was to buy some random stearing wheel controls for some random car like a pontiac grandprix. and wire it to a PAC steering wheel control converter and install the wheel controls somehwhere in the Audi. Haven't done it yet, or given much thought but it seems like a decent way to overcome that problem. You thought about what you are gonna do to operate the HU?
easy solutions. Why? Because I like PSP, I like to play PSP. I can download movies to PSP, Ect. It's basically an all in one rather than trying to find space to install a decent looking Ipod mount(they don't make them), an 8" LCD screen , and a DVD unit. (Not to mention I can surf the net on the PSP at Wireless hotspots)
I'm not worried about putting the stereo in the glove box. I'll just hold on to the remote most of the time. It's MP3 CD compatible so I'll rarely change discs.) I decided to go with a sony stereo(I know they're not he best) But I'm kinda going with a brand theme here.
Cool. I just know for me, I wouldn't wanna have to drive around with my glove box open, and I'm constantly changing discs, songs, stations, bass settings, etc. etc. etc. Definitely throw up some pics, regardless of how much progress you've made. ONe thing you'll learn about me, I'm a pic guy. I put pics up basically every step of my installs.
