installing new equipment

I just got a new head unit and subs and everything and I was just wondering how replacing the head unit effects the alarm or whatever or if it effects it at all... To remove this ad, register today for free or log in if already registered!

umm it doesnt affect the alarm at all (unless its an aftermarket one, but i still cant see it having anything to do with the alarm at all), it does make amps (like the ones you just put in to run subs and maybe a 4 channel too?) sound a lot better (less signal transfer, or a cleaner one at that) so the hotter (more voltage) of the rca preouts on an aftermarket deck will have a better signal to noise ratio than the line level converter that you are most likely using now. Overall its one of the better things that you can purchase to make sound quality better. good luck!

Yup its just telling theives that once the stock head unit is removed, it can only be turn on by a 5 digit security code that comes in your honda manual.

civicgurl - not a stupid question.

Is your alarm factory installed or aftermarket? For our '98 Vic, the factory alarm and keyless entry are wired through the stock radio. As such, extra wiring harnesses were needed. I removed the faceplate to the stock radio and the "box" tucks down in the center column, wrapped in a towel. Tucking was the hardest part of the head unit install. I don't know if Honda changed alarm wiring for newer generations or not.

Damn girl, if you think THOSE were stupid questions, you need to scan the rest of the threads in this forum. JK. Actually pretty much all the questions I've seen recently have had good weight, some making for some pretty interesting, intelligent conversation - LudlamTheory . As far as your question goes CivicGurl, its probably a little better than you think. Some auto manufacturers have recently routed such features as dome lighting, keyless entry and AIRBAG systems through the stock head unit. Fortunately for us, well for some of us, I think honda only partook in this foolishness in 2001. Anyway, the answer is that nothing will be negatively effected by trashing that garbage stock HU in you Civic. And only questions which could have been answered by common sense are stupid ones. In one of my motorcycle forums, someone once asked "I am trying to make sure that my exhaust isn't getting too hot. However, everytime I ride for a while and try to test the pipe with the touch method, it burns me. Is there a better way to test the heat of the exhaust?" - Nuff Said.

The only problem with the alarm when replacing the factory head unit is the alarm increasingly going off when your car keeps getting broken into

civicgurl - did you buy your 2K1 new or used? Whom did you buy it from? In my used 2K1 it was added on (aftermarket) when I bought it from the dealer, so I didn't have the same issues as our '98, which was factory installed bought new. If it's aftermarket then you won't have to worry about it.

What bike do you have .... I just sold my '03 F4i for a brand new '02 SV650. That bike is a blast to ride.

CivicGurl, OK, I did some research and apparently the problem only existed in 96,97 and 98 - which I knew, but although I thought I read that it came back in 2001, It seems as though that is not true. So everyone outside of the 96, 97 and 98 years is clear. To all you folks with headunits wrapped in towels behind the dash . .. I think there is some wire splicing you can do to take out the factory HU, call crutchfield I think they know about it. Does it say anything, like a company name on your alarm remote? You should be in the clear either way.

RegularJoe-

I have a 2000 F4. I love it. Its a limited production color, Orange and black, so it turns heads. I've got an undertail, custom signals -front and back, hugger, smoke screen, etc. I also custom painted my own helmet to match, complete with Honda wings. The SV is a ton of fun too. Ironically, the SV650 is 10 times for comfortable than the SV1000 IMO. Enjoy. You'll love the SV on long trips.
