Heads-Up Display (HUD)

i'm interested in adding some navigation (plus some other goodies) to my '02 LX, but i dont want the typical lcd.. anyone have any good or bad experiences with heads-up displays? and can anyone point me to where i can find get parts as well as any software i might need?

i'm a computer science major and i was planning to build a computer for my car and have the HUD as the display and add some knobs or a touch screen lcd as the interface. i was gonna build the software from the ground up as a senior project. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks guys.

ive thought about this idea as well, but decided that it was not economically feasible.

you cna get normal screens for cars that have a reverse button on them. this iwll put the picture on backwards, so if you look at it in a mirror, it appears normal.

you cna then put the screen behind the gauges facing the windshield. thats as far as I got with the theory.

as for practicality, im not sure if it would only work at night or if it could be bright enough (with or without a video line driver) to see during the day.

I dont know about angling so that the screen does not appear squewed to the eye in regards to physical fitment.

I dont know about the practicality of actually mounting it into the dash so its flush yet at the proper angle to accomplish all of the above. is there space?

and finally, once all is said and done and successful, whats the labor charge to make it look good?

I just dont see it being any sort of practical mod. be that as it may, youll probbaly be the first, if you can pull it off

Re: Heads-Up Display (HUD)

I think this is latest technology.I like this type of technology.A head-up display or HUD, is any transparent display that presents data without obstructing the user's view. Although they were initially developed for military aviation, HUD's are now used in commercial aircraft, automobiles, and other applications.

Re: Heads-Up Display (HUD)

I think it's an option to get a HUD in BMW M5's, but again it only displays Tach and speed (I think).

Seems like a good idea, but even if you get past the logistics of installing it...Are there even HUD projectors available that would have any sort of clarity when reflecting? I mean...I just can't picture having something like a computer screen reflected off glass. It just seems like it would have horrible glare, and not be worth all the work. Even if it's specifically for a HUD application, I don't know if there are any that have a resolution that would make it worth it.

Great idea though...just make sure you really think it through before you try it.
