Toshiba. Sony's are nice but more expensive.

No one builds a better laptop than IBM, but you pay accordingly.

Next on my list would be Toshiba, then probably Dell. My old Fujitsu has never had a problem either, although I'm not sure where you can find those anymore.

Peronally I would recommend Dell. I'm not a big fan of Toshiba, at least not their lower end models. I don't suggest going with Compaq or HP, although they are nice systems. Sony's I haven't heard much about, either. IBM's are excellent, but I agree they're quite expensive ..

But as a repair technician, I would recommend Dell in most cases

IBM, Sony, i heard alienware is pretty good....other than that everything else is all the same. dont get a compaq like someone said, i wouldnt get a dell either, i got a new dell desktop and i hate it!

another avenue is to go apple. the powerbook is an awesome laptop!!! and there are more things available for macs than before, so that is a totally great option also.

if you want a laptop, imho, Alienware is the way tyo go. i have a PIV 2.2 Gig processor in mine, and this is a full processor, not a laptop one, 512 Megz DDR ram, and a 64 meg ATI Radeon card. i can run wolfenstein, Quake 3, Battlefield 1942 and most of the newer games just as well as my friends regular PC's. alienwares are a little pricey, BUT you get EXACTLY what you pay for. and nothing you dont want. my alienware will BEAT THE S**T out of a dell that is simlarly priced. alienware's tech support is really good too. their people know their S**T for sure. on the downside, my alienware gets REALLY hot when im running graphic intensive programs, and the performance suffers because of this. i have a litlte fan that blows up underneath the laptop to help it cool. also, alienwares are extremely heavy. like 12-14 pounds. if your looking for a lightweight, ultra-portable laptop, then this is not the laptop for you, but if your looking for something thats portable when needed, and can KICK most desktop PC's ass, then this is the laptop for you. /end alienware plug. my 2nd favorite is the Apple/mac Notebooks. the new one iwth the 17 inch screen is so nice. mac's are great for graphics, games, or anything multimedia based.
here's a pic of what my alienware looks like:

if you are a student, you might want to consider a sotec. they just came over to the states, but from what i've seen, they are excellent machines. comparably equipped to the other "ultraportable" laptops (~1.2ghz, ~256mb ram, ~20gb) and weighing in at about 4 1/2 lbs, this is definitely the way to go. my 7.5 lb compaq is a pain to lug around sometimes, and the sotec i got for a relative is something i would prefer to take with me. i mean, 15" screen, 1.5ghz, a 32mb vid card and 512mb ram is nice, but do you really need it when you have something like that at home?

and as a repair technician, about 75% of "brand preference" is total BS. also, i wouldn't get alienware. it's just for trendy kids that wanna show off what they have.

I have a Inspiron 8000 and I love it, but my next laptop is going to be that new Apple 17" Power Book.

As far as the AlienWare laptops go, it depends on what you're looking for. Since it's running a desktop-grade P4, you can expect to get about 45 minutes of battery life, and a 3rd degree burn on your lap ;-) AlienWare also doesn't manufacture their own laptops, they outsourced it to some other company. AlienWare's in-house stuff is first rate, but there really isn't much of a history to look at for long-term reliability.

i was not aware that alienware used desktop chips in the laptops...

i made that mistake when i got my laptop and the thing really did get very hot. and i only had a 200Mhz (this was like 5 years ago). anyways...mine got so hot that it melted the wiring inside and after like 2 years i couldnt use my keyboard cause the wires melted. it could cause probs w/ disks and that stuff too...it gets REALLY REALLY hot.

id go w/ IBM or sony or mac.

Dell Inspiron all the way my sister got one for her b-day, I need to get one sometime but they are so small and not as upgradeable and fast as a desktop systems Probably by a new desktop though because I am more at home then out and about.
