redfog i think u got the right idea but u need to draw that line differently. the way you have it drawn the top would not be a 3d rectangle but a 3d parallelagram so your formula would have to change a bit.

draw the line so its parallel with the bottom plane of the object - then apply the same idea as redfog did.

ok I was thinking that the "top" was a rectangular solid (blue area), and the bottom was a triangular solid(red area). So, I just separates it into these two shapes and found the volumes for each and added them. I don't see a parallelogram anywhere.

it could be the way the picture is drawn - of course its just a hand drawing. but it looks to me like the top box in blue was not squared (90 angles everywhere). take the far right hand side of the plane of the blue box that is facing us for example. the top angle looks obtuse, while the bottom one looks acute. in a rectangle they would be equal. could be the perspective tho throwing it off. again - its just a sketch.

why are you guys making it so hard?

4drcivic2k1 is right.

use the trapazoid area formula and multiply that by the depth of the shape.

Then that will give you the volume. (if volume is what you are looking for)
