So why exactly does Linux not deserve a desktop? At least you get CHOICE with Linux as to which desktop you prefer (Gnome, KDE, etc) - that's something you really don't have in Windows. In fact, you really don't have much control of your computer when Windows is running - just try to disable/uninstall IE and you'll see what I mean.
There are a couple of good reasons I can think of for people to migrate to Linux...
1. Choice - Install what YOU want, don't install what you don't need - control is given back to the USER.
2. Reliability - Anyone in the know will agree with me on this one.
3. Cost savings - After all, do you see a $500 price tag on a Linux distro? (most of them are completely free!)
4. Open source - Open source = more developers = more brains working on the same software = higher quality software!
You also have the option of customizing it to suit your needs.
5. Palladium/DRM - For those that don't know what Palladium is, it's M$'s implementation of DRM (Digital Rights Management) which will come in the form of a new version of Windows. I really can't explain how bad this will be for consumers in just one post - do a google search for it ... very bad stuff!
Once again, no offense to Windows users - I agree that it is still the easiest to use platform out there and many software packages are designed solely for Windows environments but I think Linux is a viable alternative and will be looking better and better as MS implements Palladium in their next version of Windows.
BTW, Wine is technically a "compatability layer" for win32 apps - it is not a true emulator like VMWare. For gaming, there's WineX (which implements DirectX compatibility for Linux)
