I've always wanted an exotic animal but could never deal with sticking a wild animal into a cage or aquarium. My ex-girlfriend had a 5 foot boa and all that thing did was sit in its aquarium and sleep. She took it out for a few hours every day but still it led a pretty boring life and I think if it had the means it probably would have committed suicide before living another day like that.
So I basically have a question. Is there some biological abnormality that allows animals like dragons/snakes/spiders/fish to be put into a small environment and not hate it? Do they even experience emotion or just not care?
I know that goldfish have a memory span of about 3 second so by the time they explore the top of their enclosure, they're wondering what they might find on the bottom again. So it's not that bad for them.
All this comes from me wanting a reptile but I took care of a bearded dragon for a few days and their shit stinks, I don't want one anymore. Or maybe a snake but that would require a huge cage. And I heard chameleons are real hard to keep alive and don't like to be handled. So I'm now thinking about a very common, very cheap Rose Haired Tarantula, the pet store sells them for $25. Any suggestions?

And the irony of it is that that keeps them from really living their life. It keeps them drinking that glass of water but never really tasting it."
there's no telling what animals think being in a cage. they probably don't know any better, and if they did, who or what would want to be in a cage compared to in the wild? as for goldfish memory, the 3 second span is a myth and completely ludicrous. you can teach a goldfish things, such as tapping on the glass before you feed it everyday, eventually the goldfish learns that tapping means food time. in fact, there was a study by a japanese scientist (i believe) in which he discovered that goldfish memories, like many fish, are actually quite good. don't believe everything you hear. tarantulas can be pretty entertaining, as can many insects... unless they escape. well, that can be entertaining as well

I think I'll pick up a 50 gallon aquarium and put some sticks in there, that'll give him lots of room to move around. And I can still take it out and play around with it every day. I wonder how big they are when they're shipped to you.

I agree.. we have gold fish in our pond in the back yard and everytime my dad feeds the he taps his feet on the bridge going over one side of the pond. The gold fish immediately come to the bridge to eat.
