my sony 12x has been burning hundreds of discs for over 3 years now.
You got lucky. I have gone through 4 sony burners in 2 years. And I don't burn a lot of stuff. When I worked at a service center, sony DVD players and drives had the worst failure rate, equaled only by panasonic.
I admit I know more than average about computers, but the whole thing is you shouldn't have to. It should work the way it was designed without having to wipe the drive and start over, or buy all new hardware. You're buying a premade comp with everything installed and it should work out of the box!
EXACTLY!
it's not like i bought an e-machines for $400 or something. for fvcking sake, its $1500 system top of the line system, well 8400 is the second only behind the XPS system. besides, i configured it with the add ons, not like i just click it and bought it. i think i deserve to expect more from it. anyways my point stand DELL= Bitch.
anyways, yall think i should get a blank DVD+RW instead?

I'm sure everything does work right out of the box for a certain period of time.
IMO in this day and age, everyone should know how computers work and how to do maintence on them. We live in a society where we interact with computers so much that it should warrent people to know how they work. Its like cars, we use them so much that people should know how to pump gas, change their oil, and all the other things needed to upkeep them.
lol but thats never the case. most average people know about oil change and thats it. Some more advanced know about plugs and air filter. I'm surprised just how little people know about stuff in general, even tho they use these things all the time. i guess they don't care how it works as long as it works.

civic - what is the model number of the drive? Can you provide your service tag so I can look up your Dell?
You indicated it has been replaced twice - please provide details. Did Dell replace it twice? With the same brand of burner?
This isn't what you want to hear, but you need to get scientific.
I would think if you have gone through 3 burners at this point, it can be ruled out. So now you try a different burning application - I as well use NERO and have never had a problem. Bundled apps are not always of the highest quality - not something that Dell or any other manufacturer will tell you, but you sometimes find out the hard way.
If Nero does the same thing check cabling - replace the IDE cable connecting the drive to the motherboard. If that fails, check to see if there is a second drive attached to the second IDE channel, disconnect it and try again. Then check the IDE settings on the channel your drive is on.
An additional factor - are you running any other applications when attempting to burn? If you're getting something buffer underrun or data errors, it's possible depending upon your setup that because other apps are running, the drive isn't moving data fast enough to keep up. It isn't something I have seen alot of with newer systems (many drives have buffers in them - called "burnproof" technology), but it's still possible.

ok sorry
i'm trying to burn a DVD and kept on ejecting the blank dvd and it's saying that "insert a blank dvd or rewritable DVD 9"
argh!
don't stress out...
answer this for me and maybe i can help you with ur issues.
1. What kinda of DVD are you trying to copy?(rented, store bought, etc)
2. It might be a dual layer origianl DVD, what that means is that you won't be able to copy this DVD on to single layer with out shrinking it first...
3. Original DVD's are copy protected, so you can't just copy it, you need to remove the macrovision(copy protection) using 3rd party software... example; AnyDVD
Use DVD Shrink, DVD Decryptor and then NERO to burn it... 1st two progs are free, NERO i'm sure you can find it for free or buy it for around $8 online OEM version
if you want you can PM me and i'll try to help you out... it should be very easy...

I did not read ALL 6 pages of the posts, so I'm sorry if you're problem has already been solved. If it hasn't, the problem is right there. It's telling you to insert a blank DVD or rewritable DVD 9. That means it's looking for a Dual Layer DVD R/RW. Is that what you have been trying to insert into the burner?
Once again, I apologize if the problem has already been solved.
