technically its not dells fault because they don't make dvd burners, but hire other people to make it for them and just put a dell stamp on it. From what your telling us, its seems more like a compatibility issue. It shouldn't matter if its + or - because most new dvd burners support both. Just buy another set of dvds and see if that works. Some times certain burners don't like certain brands of dvds. From example, some models of pioneer burners won't work with tdk dvd's but work fine with fijitsu dvds.
second, you can do is check the dell website and check for firm wire upgrades for your burner. The firmware is like bios chip for your burner and upgrading that can sometimes improve compatibility with certain brand dvd's.
It is dells fault for not providing you with tech support since you did pay for it when your bought the computer. Then again thats what happens when you outsource your tech support to india.
+1 rep for me

oh isn't this fvckingtastic, i already used verbatim DVD+R, and now its SONY DVD-R. now you're telling me they are wrong AGAIN? just like everyone said, most burners SHOULD support both plus/minus. am i doing anything wrong here? if so, what do yall suggest i should do/get?
last night:
damn, when i was talking to the fvcktard, he don't even respond after i finish talking
i kept on asking "hey are you there!?"
then he will say "yes im here sir"
wtf? go say something bitch, i feel like im talking to a wall.
then he said, "sir im gonna connect you to my boss"
voila........... i was put again on hold and do the "wait till you get assistance" process. this bitch was even worse, i was getting pissy at that time and she said, "you know im gonna end it right here" aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
i'll end her dumb ass alright.
#3, yeh that's how corporate america is, as long as they get the money, just get the customer a shitty system and let him fix it/buy out of his expense.
bitch.
The more you bitch and the angrier you get, the less help you will receive from Dell and anyone else. The last person I want to help is one who can't calm down.
Check to see if the IDE cable is torn, crimped, or loose.
I've repaired a few Dell systems and compared to the other prebuilt brands, they are still the best.
I have a kick ass Dell laptop on order with a DVD burner. I'll let you know how it works when I get it.
^^exactly...iv worked in customer service before...and when someone is all rude and bitchy, the last thing i want to do is help the person out. let them know you're frustrated, but be polite. its not the rep your talking to's fault that you've gotten bad service in the past, or that you're comp isnt working properly.
iv worked on dell's and i own a dell...its been a decent computer for me
I have a dell laptop, and it's great! Of course, the FIRST thing I did is wipe the hard drive and load a clean copy of XP Pro. No issues whatsoever.
On to DVD's. Use NERO, period. Less bugs. It also sounds like your DVD drive is bad or flakey. That's not Dell's fault, however. Just suck it up, go to a computer store and buy a Plextor. They are still the best drives, period. My Plextors have been burning away for 2 years + with NO problems. The cheap drives die early. The lasers are just junk in them. Plextor has a sort of hidden pricelist for re-manufactured drives. I buy those. Great prices for brown box goods. Just get one and swap it out and be done with it.
Or.... try cleaning the lens on your current drive. I'd change it anyway, though.
LG's are OK, but I'd stay away from Sony. Worst drives ever for reliability.
The Pioneer 106D is a great DVD burner as well. Built like a brick. It's a little dated, but one hell of a solid burner. Reads and writes EVERYTHING!
I agree that it sounds like its the drive thats bad. I know what you are going through with their support, but what are you gonna do about it? Either have an aneurysm and get it replaced by Dell, or buy one from newegg. I have a "cheap" NEC 16X DL and its a freakin CHAMP. No problems and there are people who make some amazing firmwares for them that they burn full DVDs in like 4-5 mins. NEC 3520 is like $51 on newegg.
The only approach I can recommend is trying to narrow this down one thing at a time. First try new software, then try a different burner, then check your cabling. I would think it's one of the three.
If you're saying it CAN burn cd's it would seem that the drive is ok but.......

i bought emachines and i hevnt had ANY problems, as the previous guys said check connections of the dvd drive check if your driver needs an update and if you have a driver at all not all dvd burners are plugNplay, then do yourself a favor and get nero burning rom, best of the free programs that you can find
I've got a Dell laptop, this thing's been put through hell....the keyboard's gone, it got fried years ago, the hard drive got messed up once....reformat, not a problem since. Considering the abuse from the previous owner, this is the best computer I've ever seen.
Sorry if this has been posted...I missed it 'cause I'm at work. Are you loading the DVD in the drive BEFORE you are trying to burn it? If so, wait until the program you are using asks for it to be placed into the drive then proceed. Hope this helps...
Your DVD buring issue has nothing to do with dell. I run a computer business and I hear that all the time my computer is junk its a piece of shit this and that. when your buring software and or the buring drive(not made by dell most likly) is the issue. THe finally it could also be the user. NO offense you just need to relax calm down and what not.
