5w 20w Motor Oil

I was just wondering what motor oil I should use. The specs say 5w-20W. Does anyone use 5w-30w Mobil 1? I haven't found 5w-20w in stores.

welcome to the boards, search around first next time, there are many threads about what oil to use. You can use pretty much anything. I use mobil 1 10W-30. As for the 5w-20, you can use 0w-20, it is the replacement for 5w-20. And yes alot of people use mobil 1 5w-30.

Wal-Mart sells pennzoil 5w20 (dino) cheap and very reliable for daily driving...good additive package since 5w20 is thinner than 5w30 at the beginning...but at the end of the interval period 5w30 are often more degraded than 5w20 because of the additives of the 20 weight...if you want synthetic, mobil 1 5w30 is good since it's a thin 5w30 or castrol syntec 0w30(german made) both are popular for the week-end racers...

Redline 5W-20 is used. M1 0W-20 is also highly recommended.

^ Well built oil, haha!

I use whatever I feel like using. I do that mainly because I don't really know what is ideal for my sometimes pushed Civic. Therefore, I think I will follow everyone else's lead and start using Mobil 1 0W-20.

Your supposed to use synthetic in our cars. I dont do my oil changes, I have a trustworthy shop for little things. But most shops wont ever tell you to use synthetic, but if you dont always use it, your gonna have some probs down the line from the material our engine is made out of. Use the specs from the car, and synthetic, and you will be good. It will drive much better, and you dont need another change for up to 7500 miles

Stealth,

The manual calls for all Honda fluids, parts and services at the dealership. It would be a fair statement to say that you don't follow everything in the manual, isn't it? You probably don't believe everyting the manual says if you're not following it word for word because you've researched or developed an informed opinion on the subject. Undoubtedly that's why you installed your K&N filter, no?

BTW, the manual does give the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval to synthetics.

with synthenic, you get more miles out of it. i use mobil 1 5w-30 and change every 5000 miles while if i were to use non-syntenic, i would play it safe and get 2500miles after the non-syn oil change.

honda says that using any application other than what is specified for the vehicle in the handbook will void warranty. honda has told me that if i ever had a problem with the car in relation to oil or any problem that could be related that my warranty would be voided and they would charge me for service

gotrice,

That is only partially correct. If you are using the equivalent to the product offered by Honda that meets their specs, the burden will be on them to prove the non-Honda product caused the problem.

Honda says to use their fluids. Does that mean using any other brand of say, DOT 4 brake fluid, that meets the same spec as Honda results in warranty denial? Not at all.

Yea Flash,
I agree with ya man...honda wants us to buy their products for $$, but what I am saying is the guidelines for standards are set = use 5w-20 grade, you can use whatever brand you determine is good or researched, like I have, I choose castrol 5w-20, I am saying I do believe we should be using 5w-20 for max efficiency and best on our engines. I still believe synthetic is good, but uncessary unless you are racing. Yes, that is why I have the k&n , but I didn't do too much research, after all gearbox has said it filters poorly....and mine is still in for 2 years!
i agree, that weather does factor in with type of oil, but 5w-20 is still best for our cars in all weather areas and I do change my oil around 5,000 miles to be safe..

Isnt there a law that prohibits automaker from voiding warranty for use of fluids that is not made by the manufacturer?

with honda you never know what bs they will throw at you. i personally dont trust honda to service my car unless they are doing it for free, not even the supposedly maintanace they do which is bs from what i know. i have friend that works at a acura dealership and its just about the same
