Broken Radio- Hands Free Link

Hi Folks,

So, I have a 2007 Honda Civic Coup. I missed the warranty by a week, but that was over a month ago. Now I'm stuck with this seemingly bizarre problem. I haven't been able to find any mention of it on the internet, and I've googled the problem several different ways.

The Problem

Short Version- The radio doesn't work.

Long Version, Details
- None of the buttons on the radio dash give a response except for when I turn the volume dial. When I turn the volume dial it simply shoes the word volume and numbers going up and going down as I turn it but there is no sound from the speakers. That seems normal. Another problem is that the screen of the radio is not back lit, which usually indicates that the system is not on, but the car is on; it just displays the phrase: hands free link. As far as I know, my car does not have the hands free link option. which makes me suspect that the radio is "frozen" or it has crashed or there is a short somewhere. I cannot get anything else besides the volume thing to show up on the screen. The really bizarre thing is that every once in a while when I'm on the highway or something the radio will light up and it will work for 5 seconds or something.

What I've done to fix it: I unhooked the batter for a period of 10 minutes, hoping the radio computer would restart and I could just enter the reset code or something. I haven't tried unplugging the battery for longer then 10 minutes though. I did a very brief visual inspection of the circuit breaker box but there were no apparent problems, although, I didn't really know what I was looking for.

I desperately do not want to have to take it in because I fear that the diagnosis fee is going to be expensive, or they are going to tell me I need to replace the whole radio. I think I can fix it if I had an idea of what to do or what was wrong. Any suggestions, advice, or help would be extremely welcome. Thanks!

Re: Broken Radio- Hands Free Link

only other choice is take it apart and see if there is some obvious problem inside you can fix. but yeah delaer will say replace it. check ebay for used ones that you can install.
