Rep Power: 0 lining up piston w/ pad tab
Hello:
2007 Civic EX (1.8)
Two questions:
(1) Is it OK to replace ONLY both rear brake pads and not front pads, and...
(2) What is the secret to aligning caliper piston with tab on inner brake pad?
I ask this because I believe that misalignment has caused my rear discs to wear unevenly.
Thanks.
Richard

Mikey,
"...by asking questions like these, im pretty sure you are the one that needs to learn something......or i should say im positive."
Of course I'm the one who needs to learn something, that's why I asked the questions. That's stating the obvious. By the way, the personal pronoun "I" is alway capitalized.

oh a grammar junkie i see, like that is really important when it comes to fixing your car????
so why dont we all take a close look at your post above?
by the way, the word 'always' requires an 's' on the end, does it not?
you will not learn anything with the attitude you have,
don't come here asking for advice with an attitude, nobody here owes you anything

Re: lining up piston w/ pad tab
How many miles are on the car? My 2006 had to be replaced at about 40k miles, but after replacing I haven't needed to change them yet(over 80k miles since replacing)
There is a class action suite currently ongoing about premature brake wear, but idk if it applies to your car or not(or if it is even a valid lawsuit)
And can't well get along guys?
*insert some hippycrap about hot heads and cold hearts here*

Thanks, Jordan.
I think my question was answered by "ericthecarguy" in one of his videos. He explained that the cutout on the piston face has to be aligned vertically in order to accommodate the tab on the brake pad.
I'm sorry about the back and forth with the other poster, but his comment suggesting that my questions were too elementary ("... questions like these") is not what a forum like this one is all about.
I appreciate our response.

You may have got this. I assume your rear has the hand brake using the caliper. When you screw in the piston, it should be free. I just use a huge screwdriver. They make a tool but if it's so tight you need a wrench, the caliper need replaced or overhauled. Screw it all the way in and then back till it is vertical and horizontal in the window opening. It should drop right into the pad and clip. A small amount of uneven wear is normal for a floating caliper. Make sure before you go back together with the pads that it floats in and out freely on the rubber boots. If not they come with a new caliper or overhaul kits. In the snowbelt road salt states, it's probably best to start over with everything.

Most Hondas, when you pull the caliper up off the rotor and turn it 180 facing you, there are two finger like projections that the inner pad set in. When you look between these fingers, you see the piston with the two cross slots (this wrench cross slot is only in rear Hondas that have the special piston that also serves as the hand brake) that you turn to align square to the window(the opening between the two fingers) This cross slot is what I was assuming your are talking about in your first post.
