Rep Power: 0 OK to mix GH type 2 blue coolant with Valvoline Zerex or Prestone?
I am going to have to buy some more coolant this week (going to flush and replace my coolant). I have about 3/4 gallon of GH type 2 blue coolant, but of course the competition is much cheaper, so I might as well switch, since I need to buy another gallon jug, anyways.
But I hate to see $15 worth of coolant go unused. Could I at least mix my GH type 2 coolant with the new stuff I get? I called a couple of honda dealers and they didn't recommend that, but they didn't have a lot to say about it one way or the other.

Hmmm.
Just talked to one more Honda local dealer parts rep, who said not to mix GH blue coolant with anyone else's.
Then I called both Prestone and Valvoline, and they both assured me that their products were compatible with GH. In fact, the Valvoline guy specifically stated that their Zerex Asian car coolant is designed to be compatible for top off for GH, or to be used alone in their cars.

I'll definitely get another gallon of coolant.
My question is, can either Prestone or Valvoline Zerex Asian car be mixed with Type 2?

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Suuuuure you can mix them. You won't notice any issues right away, but wait a couple/few years and see if the water pump starts leaking as a result of the other coolant......Then try to prove it was the cause.
I personally would not mix them in my own car.
Surely you know someone with a car that leaks fluids out that can really use it?

I'll do a flush and then just use a green coolant. A mechanic I asked said to use any green, OEM or not.
I'll pass on the blue coolant to someone who can use it. It won't go to waste---its just a shame to not use 15 bucks worth of fluid. But since I have to buy more anyways, I'll buy the cheaper stuff, and then from then on, my drains/refills will be cheaper.

I wouldn't. Not unless your average green coolant is non-Silicate and non-Borate, and uses (or you use) deionized water as the mixer.
What's $15? (I can spend more than that on one meal at Dairy Queen LOL)
I'd use Hondas coolant. I DO use Hondas coolant.
Sounds like an average mechanics answer.
There's trade offs to get a cheaper product. Good luck.

my owners manual specifically states the following:
- using any other coolant other than Honda Blue Type 2 can cause corrosion.
why risk the headaches get the Blue OEM Type 2 coolant in there and
forget it... just my 2 cents.
