Rep Power: 0 Is this a starter issue?
Crowd sourcing this because I KNOW some of y'all are smarter than I am on this one.*
Our 2008 Honda Civic occasionally won't start. *My first suspicion and hope was the battery but Walmart and O'Reilly tests show battery is fine. Additionally O'Reilly test shows alternator is fine.this seems to leave the starter as prime suspect. *Here's what it is doing: for the past week or more it would occasionally crank slow but always start like the battery was getting week.*
The three ways it now responds when you turn the key:
1) starts ok just a little slow
2) turns over slowly then stops
3) nothing happens (not even the typical loud click when a starter is bad)
What it *doesn't* do
Does NOT make the single loud click typical of a starter going out. *
It does NOT continue to slowly crank over and over.*
NOT registering a "check-engine" so code readers wouldn't add any help to the situation.*
Most people I ask think it's "probably" the starter but they aren't sure. *
Was planing on taking it to Edmond automotive electronics to rule out something else draining the current but now it simply won't start. *
So.... Does this sound like the starter is the issue to You? *
Many Thanks!

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one
Re: Is this a starter issue?
Can you use a test light, voltmeter, ammeter, jumper wire?
The 1.8 engine starter is not the easiest to reach, it's under the intake manifold.
There is a single wire connector for the starter solenoid wire located behind the brake reservoir area. You can test the crank signal from this connection, you can try to manually engage the starter, etc.

Re: Is this a starter issue?
I will say, when it went on my '06 there was no *loud* click when trying to start it up.
I'd say the click I heard was comparable to the sound when a turn signal blinks...not very loud, but noticeable.
